I am currently studying at Edgehill College in my final year. I am
writing my dissertation and I am struggling to find information on the
Euro that dates back to the 1950's and 1960's and 70's. I know it was
not called this then, it was either called optimum currency areas or a
single currency. I know Robert Mundell and Milton Friedman wrote in
these specific areas, however I am having trouble getting access to
the journals where their work is, as my university is not registered
with some of the online services. I would be very grateful if you
could find any information willing to help me or find an answer to my
question.

Do you need scholarly articles on the Euro/EMU, or would specific but
nonscholarly information (such as on the web sites of business,
international, historical, or news organizations) be sufficient?

I would prefer journal aricles dating back to the early time, when it
was first wrote about. However newspaer articles would be sufficient.

A nice history of the euro guide is at :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/in_depth/business/2001/euro_cash/history/default.stm

and

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2450825.stm

Maybe some better search terms other than optimal currency that you
could try are ERM (or exchange rate mechanism) and ECU (or European
Currency Unit)
