Thanks for your question. According to In-Stat/MDR, there were
approximately 375 million USB-enabled devices on the market in 2002
with growth expected to hit over 860 million by 2007. This same
report states that by the end of 2003, all desktop PC's will ship with
USB enabled ports.

According to Computer Industry Almanac, worldwide, there are over 600
million PCs in use. It would appear that a safe estimate would be
that of the 600 million PC's in the world, approximately 62% are
equipped with USB ports. However, USB ports can now be found on
handhelds, cell phones and other devices, so the percentage is
probably a bit on the high side. This same report estimates that by
2007, over 1 billion PCs will be in use worldwide.

I did not find this info on a single site, however a great site with
various statistics regarding computers and the Internet is CyberAtlas
at http://cyberatlas.internet.com/

Thanks again for your question and I hope you find my answer helpful.

Apparently tar heel supplied world wide (unsold inventory) data, but
clever asked for USA penetration. If my friends and relatives are
typical, penetration is about 50% of USA households with a slightly
higher percentage USB equipped than for the world but my guess is the
62% USB does not reflect the many old computers that are still used
occasionally. 40% is probably near correct. 62% certainly does not
reflect the 200 million plus old computers that might, but probably
won't, be put back in service. Some people own a lap top/notebook
computer but no pc. Should these be counted as pc penetration? Neil
