Can you find information that will tell me how to make a homemade
camel costume for a ten-year old child? It should have a homemade
look about it but not be too ugly! Should the child's face be in the
hump or in the camel's face? Where can you order fake camel fur? Can
you find some pictures of successful costumes? I have found a few
ideas on the web but they are for a two-person camel. Thank you!

I found a series of posts on a message board in which the making of a
child's camel costume was discussed. I've condensed several posts into
one here. This may help give you some ideas:

"I used a bear pattern and changed the fabrics/colors, they have
similar ears and the pattern had no face. By the time we added a hump,
tapestry rug and tassles, we had CAMEL!...

The head is a hood that velcros under the chin. Check fabric store for
a children's pattern with this type of head piece, with halloween so
close all the costume patterns should be on sale. I made it out of a
short, nappy, tannish fun fur. The ears are smaller then a bears and
little more droopy and more on the side. I made a little tuffed patch
out of longer fur for the top of the head, just to be cute. Fancy
ribbon can be used for a halter and reins. And over sized yarn tassles
are a must.

The hump is a tube wider at the bottom then the top. It does not have
to be high. Sew an oval piece made from the same fur as the tuff on
head to the top. Or skip that and attach a small thick pillow under
the back, then cover the 'hump' with a piece of tapestry trimed with
fringe and tassles. Check furniture stores for sample piece of
tapestry.

The body is two side pieces, roughly rectangle in shape. Little higher
for the front with a neck opening and little lower and round where the
tail goes. Tail is a straight tube with some yarn 'hair' on the end.
Bottom of body is open for legs and arms. Attach hump to back. A
matching sweat suit for legs and four black socks make hooves. * You
can skip body and just go with the sweat suit and the pillow hump with
'rug or 'pack', don't forget the tail.

We left the faces plain on all the children in the play, though the
cow did have one spot shaped like a heart and the wise old camel was
wearing wire rimmed glasses.

...The Simplicity pattern 9983 has a one piece bear, make the gloves
and feet black felt and the front a solid. You can still make the hump
with a pillow on your 'camel's' back under the costume or make a
seperate hump and sew on."

Greetings, mosaicmama!

Here's a good picture from Ivy and Martin's airplane models and
children's costume website in Britain:
http://www.ivyandmartin.demon.co.uk/summers/camel.htm

If you're interested in having Ivy make one for you, here's their
chart of international mailing fees and delivery times:
http://www.ivyandmartin.demon.co.uk/summers/postage.htm

I'm not sure in what country you are located; if you ask them, they
might be willing to deliver to somewhere other than the countries
listed. They are an e-bay seller, so it's entirely possible that they
will do so. Here's their e-mail contact form:

Best wishes,

ace
