Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com
"The Fast Runner turns the frozen landscape of northern Canada into
the stage for an adventure as sweeping as The Odyssey or Beowulf.
Adapted from an Inuit legend, The Fast Runner centers on Atanarjuat, a
charismatic young hunter struggling for the affections of Atuat, who
has already been promised to Oki, the son of the camp's leader. When
Atuat chooses Atanarjuat, Oki seems to accept it, but later events
turn his anger and hatred into a murderous spite. This story, as
passionate and primal as any film noir, is framed by the daily lives
of the Inuit--a struggle for survival that is both simple and vivid,
foreign yet immediately understandable. No one in the cast is a
professional actor, but the performances are direct and compelling,
telling a story that is both epic and intimate. --Bret Fetzer"

Can you tell me if the DVD version is 'zone free' and check the price
- $27.96 seems low. Also, would the video VHS version of this film be
playable in Australia?

Hi Deadfinish and thanks for making your clarification.

"...and check the price - $27.96 seems low."

If you read carefully, the info I gave you regarding the price is the
same as what is posted in the Amazon.com link I gave you, no more no
less. Here's the shipping cost to Australia:

"Also, would the video VHS version of this film be playable in
Australia?"

The VHS version available is in NTSC format. Most of Australia use PAL
as so unless your player can support it, you may not be able to view
it if your player is suited only for PAL format. Check your VHS player
and TV manual regarding this.

You have three options just in case:

1) You can get the NTSC release and have a video specialist in your
area convert it to PAL format.
2) You can wait until a VHS PAL version is released, but that could be
a long wait.
3) You can get a transcoder such as the KDV-500 to convert NTSC to PAL
so you can watch it. It may be a bit pricey but it will solve both
your DVD and VHS coding problems in the future. No more worries
regardign what format you're going to get in the future.

It seems there's a glitch with my system. The first part of my
clarification was cut off. Here's the first part of that
clarification:

"Can you tell me if the DVD version is 'zone free'..."

I scoured the Internet for this but everywhere I looked, the current
DVD release is for Region 1 only. In the first link I gave you that
leads to Amazon.com, there is a note about regional coding:

"NOTE: Some Region 1 DVDs may contain Regional Coding Enhancement
(RCE). Some, but not all, of our international customers have had
problems playing these enhanced discs on what are called "region-free"
DVD players."

For more information on RCE, click here:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html

Now, If you can wait a little longer, Region 4 coding is due to be
released at the end of this month. I found this info at:

Michael D's Region 4 DVD Wideo Info Page
Upcoming Region 4 DVDs (Alphabetical Order)
Fast Runner, The (Atanarjuat)
Confirmed release: 30-Apr-2003
