Hello,
I am looking for descriptive information concerning private equity
products. More specifically, I would like to know what kind of
products the biggest banks in the world offer to their private clients
in terms of private equity products. I am interested in companies like
ABN Amro, Credit Suisse, Citigroup, Coutts, Deutsche Bank, BNP
Paribas, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JP Morgan Case, Merill Lynch, Morgan
Stanley, Pictet, Hypovereinsbank to mention a few. Do these companies
offerprivate clients to invest in private equity funds, fund of funds
(name and structure), how much need to be invested, what is the asset
allocation, costs and fees, domicile etc.

I would be very happy if anyone could provideme with information on
this issue.

Regards RBM

Hi!

When you say "private equity funds" these are usually understood as
venture capital funds so these funds usually come from Venture Capital
firms.

"The term "private equity" is the term generally used in Europe to
cover the industry as a whole, both buy-outs and venture capital.
"Venture capital" is a subcategory covering the seed to expansion
stages of investment. Private equity describes equity investments in
unquoted companies often accompanied by the provision of loans and
other capital bearing an equity type risk."

"Private equity terms"
http://www.bvca.co.uk/publications/vcterms.html

"Private equity, also known as venture capital, is investment outside
of public capital markets. while private equity can be raised from a
variety of sources, such as friends, family members and business
angels, the more visible (and measurable) avenue is the private equity
market where funds are channelled to businesses – typically in new or
fast-growing unlisted companies, or companies in financial difficulty
with potential for restructuring – by fund managers."

"The Private Equity Market in Australia"

Would Venture Capitalists be part of the answer as well since it seems
that such funds pertain to them?

Hi, thank you for your response. I will try to explain:

If a wealty individual goes to any of the bigger banks wealth
management part and want to invest 1 mln Us $, will this client be
offered to put this money into a private equity product ? My
impression is that most of the wealth management institutions offer
their private clients to invest in a fund, or a fund of fund which is
put together by investments in other pure private equity funds and
directly in private equity firms. I think most of them white label
their products, ie. buy pe funds from smaller fund shop like
Blackstone and Carlyle. I am not interested in the private equity
firms themselves (ie. to know what kind of firms they invest in,
start-ups, venture capital, public to private etc, or in what
region/business categroy they are specialized). I am interested in the
type of products that the bigger institutions would offer to you or me
if we had a little fortune to invest. I also beleive that some of them
offer clients to invest in funds which are build up by not only
private equity, but maybe also real estate and hedgfunds. For
eksample, if you go to ABM Amro with 1bn US$ and say you want to
invest in private equity, willABN offer you to put money in a fund
that only invests in private eqtuiy firms around the world, do they
offer a fund that they bought from Blackston or Carlyle, does ABN
invest in private equity themsselves with the money you gave them (I
do not think so).
To sum up, my question is what are the names if these products, how
are they structured and what are the cost etc. I am interested in the
pe products offered by the institutions that I mentioned in my
original question. Like ABN Amro Capital, they have a private equity
arm in the Us focusing only on Norh American companies (start-up,
venture capita, public to private), but I am not interested in the
products this private equity firm produce, I am interested in the pe
procucts offered by the ABN Amro Private banking part (from private
banking to wealthy individuals). If the product that ABN private
baning sells to individuals also contains investments in venture
captal funds or firms, then I would like to know that. So yes,
venture capitalist could be a part of the products that i am looking
for.

This was long, but I hope it is a bit clearer.
Than you very much,

RBM

Hello -

I've done some preliminary research into this question, and have found
2 prominent institutions are very reticent about giving any
information out about such funds. As their name implies, these funds
are very private. They don't typically disclose information such as
where the funds are allocated, costs, and fees, etc. unless a
relationship has been developed with the institution. Would contact
information for each institution, along with the name of the fund and
minimum investment requirements suffice as an answer?

Thanks,

Actually, "name of the fund" may not be available.

jbf 777 ga, hello !

Thank you for looking into my question. I know this is very difficult
to get and I appreciate your effort. But I am afraid that just the
name of the fund and the minimun investement requirements would be too
little information for me. It is not useful unless i can get
informatin on half or more of the categories that I specified in my
initial question.

Thanks again,
kind regards,

Obviously, this is quite an involved question. If you go to
http://www.assetnews.com/products/reports/fof.htm for $1000 you can
have the comprehensive answer.

To give you more of a flavor, you can check out CSFB who has one of
the larger private equity fund of funds. Try them at:
http://www.csfb.com/private_equity/html/pe_funds.shtml

TD also runs a significant fund of funds business (although bigger in
hedge funds than in P/E.) Try them at
http://www.tdcapital.com/PrivateEquityInvestors

Here are a couple of general comments:

Fees: I'm not 100% sure on P/E fund of Funds, I do know that fees on
Hedge Fund FoF range from as low as 1% Management fee to as high as 1%
+ 10% Carried Interest. I would imagine the latter applies in the fee
heavy P/E space.

Structure/Domicile: The general answer here is whatever you need.
Here's a sample of what can be done:

Insurance Wrap - provides you with tax advantages
Total Return Swaps - can provide leverage (and in the case of hedge
fund investments, convert s/t to l/t
Offshore funds - These are quite common

In terms of minimum size, I imagine the minimums are at least $500k to
$1 mil for most of these funds, but again, it can vary.

My advice to you is buy the research piece if your serious about this,
otherwise, talk to the guys at CSFB to get a flavor. For the most
part, most of the big shops offer very similar offerings.
