Hi there, Instyle!

The first thing I did was visit Walmart [ http://www.walmart.com ] to
confirm the name of the current CEO which I can confirm is Mr H. Lee
Scott.
http://www.walmartstores.com/wmstore/wmstores/Mainabout.jsp?pagetype=about&categoryOID=-8496&catID=-8242&template=CompanyOfficers.jsp
Apparently, he has been working for Walmart for some 22 years now,
managing quite a few divisions of the company during that time and
beginning as assistant manager of the truck fleet.
The article "Walmart Management Move" (About.com) contains some detail
about the handover of the CEO position from David Glass to H. Lee
Scott and includes the quote: "Since 1995, Scott has also served in
key leadership roles in merchandising and as president and CEO of the
Wal-Mart Stores division. ... He is expected to be an excellent
replacement for Glass and the transition should be seamless for retail
giant".

Recently, Walmart removed chiropractic benefits for all employees,
effective from January 2003.
This has clearly caused some concern for some associations who have
forwarded a letter to Mr Scott requesting that the company reconsider
it's employee healthcare policy.
One such association published this information as a news article on
the web site: [ http://www.occhiro.org/ACAReports/2002/200210/ACA20021028.htm
] (Article 5)
The letter [ http://www.acatoday.com/insurance/managed_care/WalMart.shtml
], contains the quote: "The ACA believes this to be an inappropriate
choice for Wal-Mart and has serious concerns about the impact on your
associates who choose chiropractic care as their healthcare
preference.".
One web site has an extensive detailed study of the Walmart company
and suggests that they do not have an excellent relationship with
their employees.
One section quotes: "...Extensive labor relation's problems are common
at Wal-Mart. ... Wage issues, shift scheduling, and workplace rights
abuses are cited by labor groups. This seems to go against its
founding principles of respect for employees..." [
http://www.mike-pereira.com/subpage/docs/walmartcs.htm ].
This document links to the "Walmart Good Works" [
http://www.walmartfoundation.org ], which is a charitable initiative
recently set up.

Another web site suggests that, in general, Mr Scott is doing
extremely well.
They claim that the CEO has "...increased sales to become the number
one company in the world in revenue".

The document below seems to disagree with the companies ideas though.

Thanx for your answer. The websites you have listed do not really
mention much about the CEO. They deal with mostly Wal-Mart itself. I
am looking for specific information regarding the "leadership style"
of Lee Scott. I hope you can help.

Hi there, Instyle.

I understand your request fully so I will attempt to find some more
sources for you.

Because Mr Scott is a fairly new CEO, there is not a lot of material
on the web devoted to his particular management style in this
position.
However, by broadening my search terms I was able to track down a few
more sites.
You will notice that instead of searching for "walmart h lee scott
style", I simply searched for "lee scott leadership" instead to gain a
few more search results.
However, the drawback to this is that there will be quite a large
amount of irrelevant results.

One of the first websites I found contained the following quote:
" ... Mr. Scott identified several lessons that he learned that
contributed to his successful transition as Wal-Mart's new CEO. A few
of his suggestions that might be helpful to firms in the future
include the following: (1) Firms should cross-train high-level
executives so they are familiar with as many segments of the business
as possible. (2) Candidates for the top leadership positions in firms
should be exposed to the board of directors as soon as possible in
order to learn the board's expectations from the company's leadership.
(3) Both the outgoing and the incoming CEO's have new roles to learn.
Discuss the transition thoroughly in order to resolve potential
problems quickly. (4) Stay humble. ... "
"How Wal-Mart Transfers Power"
http://myphlip.pearsoncmg.com/cw/mpviewce.cfm?vceid=2461&vbcid=4335

Another describes him as modest, cautious and in possession of a
"broad skill set".
I have highlighted his name in the following document:
"Searching for Saviors: Can Retailers Truly Find The Perfect Chief
Exec?"

This Yahoo BusinessWeek page has a profile of Mr Scott including the
excerpt: " ... The real key is taking care of customers," says Scott.
And as Wal-Mart's shares have amply demonstrated over the years, if
customers aren't disappointed, shareholders won't be, either. ... "
"H. Lee Scott Jr. - Key Accomplishments"
http://yahoo.businessweek.com/magazine/content/02_02/b3765047.htm

While researching this for you, I also found an interesting piece of
information which includes his salary details.
http://www.timesdispatch.com/business/ceo/scott.shtml
This is also held on another site, although with slight monetary
difference and with a comparison to some other CEO's.
http://www.arkansasbusiness.com/news/print_editions/ceo.html
I also located this short profile, including some more factual
details.
http://www.arkansasbusiness.com/whoswho/ceo/ceo_display.asp?ID=30

Moving on, I found an excellent profile on Mr Scott which is more in
depth than anything else I have found so far.
"Wal-Mart CEO Scott: The secret of our success"
http://www.icsc.org/srch/sct/sct0702/page53.html

In light of the above articles that I located, I agree completely that
you were correct to request a clarification and was more than happy to
help you.
I hope that these websites will assist you well.
Regards,
errol-ga.
