Question ID: 188821
I’d like some help in doing some research and analysis of (e-)mail
servers. More specifically I’d like the following:

1. 9 mail servers to be reviewed

2. 3 should be free-low cost, 3 should be mid-market, 3 should be high
end

3. You will need to define the pricing brackets for these 3 groups –
‘free-low cost’, ‘mid-market’ and ‘high end’

4. You will need to pick the 3 in each bracket which you feel are best
of breed for that market bracket

5. For each mail server I need the following:

- Company name
- Product name
- Pricing information
- Contact information (URL, telephone, address)
- Summary of pros / cons
- Product features
- Technical information
- Support / Customer Service information

Most of the above information should be available on the vendor’s web
sites. I would expect you to add value as follows:

- knowing which mail servers to select
- including some intelligent analysis in the “Summary of pros/cons”
section though this should be brief
- leaving no blanks and keeping the structure/quantity/quality of your
review of each consistent

Hello Ashley:

I did research based on your specifications. As there are many mail
servers, I had to start from somewhere. I chose the most authoritative
source of information i.e. ‘Server Watch’ at
http://www.serverwatch.com. From there onwards, I did an extensive
research on each of the servers listed on the website. Based on my
research, I came out with the three best mail servers in each
category. In comparing mail servers in each category, I took into
account many factors (industry reviews, customer reviews, awards
received, tests and brand familiarity etc). I allotted points to each
mail server on these factors. I am not going to list the criteria here
because the evaluation criterion is itself extensive. If you need me
to post the criteria of evaluation, I will rather post it as a
clarification.

I didn’t post technical information of individual mail servers.
Instead, I think that you will get a better idea by clicking on the
first link in the industry review (in summary).

I also tried my best to provide you a link to a page which is
specifically designated to ‘features’. I also provided different
contact information both for the support services of the product and
the company itself.

I think the best place to view a brief summary of each many individual
mail servers is http://www.serverwatch.com/stypes/index.php/bWFpbA==
(Mail Server Reviews)
Note: Link for Review is on top of the evaluation Box of individual
mail servers)

Although reviews of ‘Server Watch’ were very helpful with my decision
but they were just a factor of the final decision. Although, I found
out later that there rankings and my review on the performance of
individual servers didn’t vary much.

In two categories, I provided a runner up (meaning that it was almost
almost close).

Following is the result:

Thanks for this. Feedback as follows:

Positives:
- turnaround speed very good.
- telling me how you did the research and which resources you used
very good.
- links to reviews very useful and much appreciated
- quality and conistency very good.

Negatives:
- would have liked the product overview in text as part of the
response as opposed to a link. One paragraph summary would have been
good.
- would be useful to know the price-range bands you used for 'high
end', 'mid tier' and 'free-inexpensive'

Follow up:
- I would like the criteria of evaluation posted as a clarification
please. This helps me know 'what to look for'.

Overall I was very impressed. Certainly enough that I shall shortly be
posting more questions.

Ashley

Hi leader-ga

Quality is indeed what I'm after (hence fee at high end of range). Let
me know if you need further clarification on any points.
