I live in RI and every year at Easter, my mom gets an Essem Easter
Ham. Well, this year she said she couldn't find one ANYWHERE. They
are supposedly made in Virginia. I contacted local stores down there
and they haven't given me any info. There isn't a website or anything
for Essem. Can anyone help me? They still still even exist??? How
do I get one shipped to RI?? Thank
You!!!

Greetings VanillaCream:

The part of you question "they still even exist???" seemed to be the
case until I discovered that the Essem company was bought out by
Tyson, according to Brent Lisai of http://www.lisais.com, a meat
market in Bellows Falls, Vermont.

Brent will be more than happy to special order your mom an Essem ham
in time for Easter. :)

The store accepts Mastercard and Visa and their telephone number is
(802) 463-4118. Store hours are Mon. - Sat. 8am to 8pm and Sunday 9am
to 5pm.

A bit about Lisais from their web site:

"Lisai's is a family owned and operated store that specializes in
choice meats, great service, and all your grocery needs. Established
in 1926, Lisai's continues to thrive today around a family oriented
atmosphere. You can find a Lisai's Market in Bellows Falls and
Chester, Vermont. It's the place to go for the best meat in town."

Brent explained that he didn't have any hams in stock but he assured
me he could have one to you in time for Easter. He said that when
Tyson bought out Essem's, they continued the same process for their
meats as Essem originated. Brent said he loved their products and had
eaten them all his life, and he said he does have Essem's Kielbasa and
other Essem products in stock.

I guess you'll be having a fine Easter dinner this year. :)

Hello! I was thrilled about your answer up until my mom just called.
She called the number you gave in the e-mail. He was at another
branch, so she called over there and spoke to Brent. Brent proceeded
to tell her there is NO WAY he will ship a ham to her in RI - He isn't
in the shipping business and doesn't even know how to ship a ham. He
said there isn't anything he can do for her. I'm left with the
question of what happened???? If in fact, you called Brent and he
said yes he would ship, why did he tell her no on the phone?? As of
now, I am very unsatisfied. Please respond, Thank you.

I am calling Brent back right now to discover why he told me he would
ship it to her and why he then changed his story. This is odd.

Should he change his story to me, I'll do a bit more searching because
if I found it once, perhaps I'll find it again. If not, I'll contact
the Google Answers editors and ask that the question be removed.

Truly, this is odd. I'll keep you informed.

Well, I phoned back Lisai's and Brent's off today, and the person who
spoke with me said "we don't ship" - then I called the link provided
by THX1138 below and explained your ordeal to the person there and he
said "we don't ship". I am at a loss to understand why the mix-up in
communication occurred with Brent because I did share all the facts
with him and reported accurately in my answer.

I did discover that both stores purchase their stock from Associated
Grocers of New England (AGNE). Their number is 603-669-3250. At this
point, the cost of my telephone calls far exceeds the $1.50 I've
earned for the question, so I hope you won't mind phoning AGNE to see
if they have a distributor near you or if they will ship you a ham. I
am at a loss to understand why the mix-up in communication occurred
with Brent because I did share all the facts with him.

Meanwhile, I have a dear friend that lives in Pawtucket and I've sent
her an email asking if she has happened to see one in her area.
Believe me, this turn of events is dismaying for me, too. :(

You're very gracious and I still want to assist you in this quest. :)
I heard back from my friend and she said she would phone the markets
in her area. She grew up in Pawtucket and remembers Essem products
well.

I'll let you know if she finds one because she said she's happy to
assist a store in mailing it to you.

Hello vanillacream75.

Yes they exist! "Essem $2.29" per lb but you would have to travel to
Haverhill Massachsetts.

Maybe another researcher will have more success.

Dear VanillaCream75:

My friend had no luck finding the Essem ham (or label) in Pawtucket or
Providence. Thanks again for your rating and comments and I hope a
ham can still be located. For next year, I would contact the Tyson
company at mailto:comments@tyson.com and ask where the retailers of
Essem are in your area. Then, your mom can pre-order a ham from the
closest retailer in time for Easter.
