Several years ago I heard a semi-hiphop song on a major rock station
in St. Louis (KPNT.) Every person I've asked about it remembers the
song but not the title or artist. So I figured I'd give this a try.
The main chorus was "doin' it all for the ans" to spell it out
phonetically. And each verse of the song was about different people
doing bad things "for the ans."

I have found one possibility, but I am posting this as a clarification
request because there doesn't appear to be enough online information
to confirm that it is (or is not) the song you are looking for.

Here are links to two brief clips from a 1998 rap song called "For The
Fans," by Skull Duggery:

Tower Records: These Wicked Streets

Let me know if this is the song you are seeking. If it is, I will
post an answer, including my search strategy.

Hello instereo,

I believe the song you are looking for is actually entitled 'Ends'. It
is performed by the popular rap/hip-hop artist Everlast. (formerly of
House of Pain)

Due to copyright considerations, I can only post a portion of the song
here :

Everlast - Whitey Ford Album
"Ends....Some people will rob their mother for the ends Rats snitch on
one another for the ends Sometimes kids get murdered for the ends So
before we go any further I want my ends..."
http://home.t-online.de/home/G.Ohrner/lyrics/WhiteyFord/WhiteyFordE.htm

"But he's from business school and he's nervous with a tool So he ends
up on his back in a bloody pool for the Ends..."

This song is on the album entitled "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues",
released in 1998. You can find out more about this artist and his
releases here:

RollingStone EverLast Site

As for his official site..... that's a different story ;-)
http://www.forevereverlasting.com/

Search Strategy Used:
None. Everyone I have ever met thinks he says "for the ans..." :-)

If this, by some chance, is not the song or artist you were seeking,
please ask for clarification, and I will do my best to get you the
correct answer.

Thanks for the great question!

Excellent! This is it! You guys have amazing God-like powers. I'm
almost tempted to ask "What is the meaning of life" for a couple
hundred. Or maybe "What happened to Jimmy Hoffa." The world needs an
answer once and for all.

I should have at least put a link for you to listen to a sample. This
sample is on the Amazon site. You'll need to scroll down a bit, and
click on the song entitled 'Ends' :

Oh Bugger!

I have that album, I had the song in my head, and do you think I could
make such a simple connection? Talk about can't see the woods for the
trees...
