Question ID: 189490
How do I remove my old website from the internet on Geocities that I
have the URL still, but I lost the password for? I have read all the
info on the site and located what I believe was the password which no
longer works. Please do not direct me to the geocities info or how to
find lost password page because that didn't help.

Assuming that you are the copyright holder as listed on the page, you
can file a DMCA takedown request with Yahoo (owner of Geocities) and
Google. You simply no longer authorize them to use your copyright.

http://docs.yahoo.com/info/copyright/copyright.html
://www.google.com/dmca.html

For each, you will need to print out a letter as described on the
above pages, sign, and mail it. Neither company will accept requests
sent via email unless you have had prior contact about a DMCA issue.

If the page is removed from Geocities, it should disappear from the
Google index as well after a period of time. If you want it removed
more promptly, a DMCA letter to Google should handle it.

Without that password, it looks like you may be stuck like thousands
of others until Yahoo decides to dump old sites with no activity and
may possibly drop yours.

I have heard of one occasion where the person had forgotten password
and the like, but were able to provide proof by way of personal
identification and persuaded Yahoo to close the site. But that isn't
first hand knowledge, it is something I heard.

If you care to try calling, their information is listed on the site
here:

Even if you are successful, there are the archives and other places
where it will remain for a long, long time.

Good luck,

I have a habit of making up personal info when signing up for the
likes of freebies like Geocities. I believe that if I had used my true
info, then when I lost my password I could have eventually deleted my
Geocities site. As it is, it's been sitting there for years,
unattended, ugly, embarassing...

Can someone just take it down somehow or tell me how to at least
remove it from Google. I love google, but don't want this old site
listed.

Sfdesign,

Did you include your full name on that site, and does it come up in
the first page of the Google result upon entering it? That's pretty
much the only thing you should be worried about, because else, nobody
will really find that page.
If that's the case however, I suggest simply creating a new page with
your name which you then make more popular.

Also, if you still have your old email address, you might want to ask
Geocities to send the password over again. If you don't have it, maybe
you can just send them proof that it's one and the same person.

As for simply deleting a Google search result, well, unfortunately
(but naturally) that's not really possible!

Hope it helps!

Can't you just convince geocities that you are the author and owner of
the site?

Convince them that you are the person photographed, email them from
the email address used on the page. If you give them enough clearcut
evidence that you created the site, perhaps you can persuade them to
work with you on this one.

Of course as long as your site still exists, they still have the right
to display it, kind of a loop in your case....

"Yahoo does not claim ownership of the Content you place on your Yahoo
GeoCities Site. By submitting Content to Yahoo for inclusion on your
Yahoo GeoCities Site, you grant Yahoo the world-wide, royalty-free,
and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the
Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and
promoting your Yahoo GeoCities Site on Yahoo's Internet properties.
This license exists only for as long as you continue to be a Yahoo
GeoCities homesteader and shall be terminated at the time your Yahoo
GeoCities Site is terminated."
