I am looking for the image of a particular painting I saw housed in the
Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Searches on the net so far have been
fruitless. The painting is on Floor 2 of the museum I believe, by
painter Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837), and the painting is
believed to be of his daughter, Emma Jane Hodges (1789)

Just a quick clarification: This is not the work, 'Maternal Instinct',
but an untitled oil painted portrait of Hodges daughter, Emma Jane
Hodges (or believed to be anyway), aged perhaps 16-18 perhaps.

To my recollection, it is housed on Level 2 (level three if you're
from the US - for some reason the ground floor is level 0), in the
Dutch Painters section, in one of the larger halls of the gallery. I
know it is on the same floor as the museum gift shop.

The Amsterdam museum you mentioned does have a website--have you
considered contacting them to get an exact title for the name of the
picture and if they have a shop that would offer reproductions or
could possibly suggest another source that might have a copy?

There is also a website for WorldWide Art Resources at
http://wwwar.com and if you do a search using the artist's name
CHARLES HOWARD HODGES you will find an image of a picture called
MATERNAL INSTINCT (dated 1798) that shows possibly Mr. Hodges's wife
and a baby girl--could this possibly be the picture you were referring
to or was it a painting that showed only the daughter?

SINCERELY,

I may very well have to contact the Rijksmuseum on this one, as I've
been all through every other online resource that I can think of to
locate the painting. This is not Maternal Instinct, but a portrait
(believed to be anyway) of the artist's daughter herself, perhaps aged
16-18? Unfortunately there is no title listed, the entire plaque under
the painting that I wrote down stated that the painting was believed
to be the artist's daughter, Emma Jane Hodges, 1789. There was also a
date listed on the plaque of 1868, but as this is after Charles Hodges
death, I am assuming that is the date that the Rijksmuseum acquired
the painting perhaps.

When I originally saw the painting, it reminded me of a friend of
mine, and lacking a camera to take a picture, I figured writing down
all the relevant artist details would be enough to locate a jpeg of
the work online once I got back home from vacation. Unfortunately,
this does not appear to be the case.

The Rijksmuseum just emailed me with an attached jpeg of the painting
I was looking for. Apparently you can search all the paintings in
their collection, but for now, the search only functions in the Dutch
side of their website. The English version of the collection search
has not been created yet.
