Question ID: 189705
I compile RedHat 7.1's gnuChess program in RedHat 8.0. (like the
earlier chess version better than the current verion on RH 8.0) Using
make, make install, some compiled files are installed in
/usr/local/bin.

By using ./gnuchess, however, I got a terminal version of the game
instead of the graphical version of the game.

I also used gnome's "Run Program..." to run this
/usr/local/bin/gnuchess program, nothing showed up.

Please advice
(a) how to get the gnuChess program run in the graphical mode.
(b) where is the newer gnuChess(object file) of RH 8.0 located? I used
"locate gnuchess" and find the documents locations only.

Regarding (b), I found out that the RH 8.0 gnuChess is located at
/user/bin. Still, ./gnuChess generates a terminal version only. Would
like to know how to get the graphical interface.

(a) I tried a short cut by using RH 8.0's /usr/bin/xboard on gnuChess
4.0(RH 7.1's). It does not work. After the first move, there is no
response from the opposite side.

(b) www.tim-mann.org has a wealth of informations on gnuChess
software. Still trying to find out what is going on. If you have
answers, please answer.

What about gnuchessx?

Clarification of Question by ga1000-ga on 14 Apr 2003 09:43 PDT
Xboard is supposed on work on gnuChessx. In fact, on gnuChessx 4.0.

But I did not find gnuChessx in RH 8.0, only gnuChess, in the usr/bin
directory.

At this time, I am of the opinion that Red Hat probably altered xboard
somewhat, so that it looks for the gnuChess instead of gnuChessx, and
operate on gnuChess 5.0, instead of gnuChess 4.0.

So I downloaded xboard from the gnu site to create a fresh xboard. At
this time, however, can not unpack it with the RH 8.0's 'file roller'.
Got an ownership error message. Do you know what it is and how to
bypass the problem?

xboard package was unpacked with RAR without any problem. Will see
whether the compiled xboard works out.

To Studboy.ga

I download the gnuXboard program and compiled it. The latest xboard
works fine with gnuChess 4.0.

So the problem is aolved. Now I can play both RH 8.0's gnuChess 5.0,
or gnuChess 4.0.

I think RedHat might (just might) have altered the xboard program,
because RH 8.0 does not have gnuChessX(at lease I did not find any),
but only the gnuChess program. ./xboard would activate the program,
while the original gnuXboard program takes some parameters to activate
gnuChessX.

gnuXboard programs and instructions are available from
www.tim-mann.org.

Howdy ga1000!

You might want to check out Gnome Chess at JP Rosevear's page at
the Ximian Primates' site:
http://primates.ximian.com/~jpr/gnome-chess/

"Gnome Chess is a GUI chess client for the GNOME system which
runs on Linux ..."

"Currently users can play against local chess engines like GNU
Chess ..."

It appears that the "preferred" graphical way of playing gnuChess
is through xboard/X WIndows, as stated in the package notes, such
as this one from a Yale University FTP site:
http://ftp.wss.yale.edu/rpm2html/rh80/RedHat/RPMS/gnuchess-5.02-9.i386.html

"Install the gnuchess package if you would like to play chess on
your computer. If you'd like to use a graphical interface with
GNUchess, you'll also need to install the xboard package and the
X Window System."

To locate the gnuChess object file, you might try doing an RPM
query on the package to find out the name of the various files,
and then do a "find" to locate it.

rpm -qlp gnuchess-5.02-9.i386.rpm will list the files
find . -name <filename> -print will find the file

You might have to put in a path to the RPM package to get
the query to work, and you might want to change to your
root directory before doing the find.

Search strategy:

gnuchess gnome problems
://www.google.com/search?q=gnuchess+gnome+problems

The RPM and find information was from my personal knowledge.

Looking Forward, denco-ga

To Denco-ga:

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check into that website and see how
the xboard package works out.
