Question ID: 189757
"Mignon" an opera by French composer Ambroise Thomas: I'm looking for
a cd (or even a tape recording) with a booklet in French WITH English
translation. I'd love a video (dvd would be perfect!) WITH English
subtitles--even w/ so-so visual quality would be okay!

Hi kimmich,

Well this has proven to be quite the challenge. Although it's not hard
to find information about the opera, finding a recording is quite
another matter. Below are a few options along with a libretto with
English translation which I hope you will find suitable.

INFORMATION:

Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896) MIGNON
"Opera in three acts by Ambroise Thomas, words, based on Goethe's
"Wilhelm Meister", by Barbier and Carré. Produced, Opéra-Comique,
Paris, November 17, 1866, with Galli-Marié...Time: Late Eighteenth
Century; Place: Germany; Italy.
"The Definitive Kobbés Opera Book"
edited, revised and updated by The Earl of Harewood
NY: Putnam's (©1976). Second Printing. Page 622.

LIBRETTO (for sale):

"Metropolitan Opera House Grand Opera Libretto: Mignon
New York: Fred Rullman, Inc Trade Paperback. No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾"
- 12" tall. Soft cover libretto is good condition, browning along
edges, previous owner's name in ink at top. Written in the original
language (Italian, French or German) with English translation. "The
only Correct and Authorization Edition", "Knabe Piano Used
Exclusively". Easy to read and understand libretto. We have over 20
Met Librettos. Probably printed in the 1930's. Nice cover art. Edward
Johnson, general manager."

"Recorded in England in June and July 1978 and not available since its
original release in September 1978 on LP, this recording has been
digitally remastered for optimal sound quality. To this day, it
remains the only complete recording of this rare French romantic opera
and the only one to include the alternate final scene and alternate
arias."

2. "The present performance is taken from a production at Compiègne in
1996 and is the first on CD. However, by one of those coincidences of
which only prima donnas and recording companies are capable, Sony
Classical have just remembered that they have a performance rusting
away in their vaults recorded in London in 1978 under Antonio de
Almeida with Marilyn Horne in the title role and the other major parts
taken by Ruth Welting, Alain Vanzo, Nicola Zaccaria and Frederica von
Stade. The scholarly Almeida included alternative versions of the
beginning of Act Two and the finale and his four LPs, timed at 194’
55", occupy three CDs. Since the present 2-CD issue is not exactly
ideal, readers are advised to seek further information about the Sony
reissue, which I have not heard yet, before deciding which to buy."

I'd like to suggest that you register a "want" at eBay for the CD by
Sony Classical - eBay will notify you when one is listed.

please post a clarification request before rating my answer.

Thank you,
hummer
