Question ID: 189824
I have a 500Mhz G4 Macintosh running OS X 10.2.4. I recently bought a
used Radeon 8500 to replace the old video card that came with the Mac
(Rage128). Now, Warcraft III won't run; I get the error message
"Sorry, an error occurred while initializing OpenGL. How can I fix
this?

Is it a genuine Radeon 8500 Mac Edition retail card? There are a
plethora of different models of ATI cards, and just because it's an
8500 doesn't mean it'll work in your Mac.

If it is a retail Mac Edition 8500, have you tried installing the
driver?

It could also be an Apple OEM Radeon 8500 (i.e. purchased in an Apple
computer). If this is the case, you should still be able to get it to
work, but may need other drivers.

If it's not a Mac Edition card or an Apple OEM card, it may be
possible to flash the ROM to make it work, but this is rather more
involved, if possible at all.

Hi and thanks for answering. It is a genuine Radeon 8500 Mac Edition
card. I have installed the drivers, both the recommended and the
latest updates. Is there perhaps a way to resintall the OpenGL files?

Try re-running the 10.2.4 system update; I've had my OpenGL subsystem
stop functioning, to be repaired by rerunning the Combo updater [1]
for the most recent system update.

If that doesn't help, the 10.2.5 upgrade may also solve your problem.
I can't say that this will work or not, but it certainly is worth a
shot.

Let me know if either of these work out for you!

I installed 10.2.5 a couple of days ago, and now everything's fine.
Thanks for your help!
