I've got a list of companies which I believe are likely to hire an
entry level software engineer with my particular background:
Microsoft, hewlett packard, oracle, google, agilent, AOL, IBM, Yahoo,
Siebel, Verizon, and Schlumberger. My goal is to get a job where I can
consistently work less than 50 hours per week. How do the hours worked
by software engineers at these different companies compare? Are any of
these companies known for requiring especially light (or heavy) hours?
The flexibility of the hours doesn't matter to me.

Hello beatle-ga,

Based on my knowledge of the industry, the answer is likely to be that
none of the companies you've listed are likely to offer workweeks of
under 50 hours for entry-level software engineers. You have to pay
your dues and long hours are part of the price you pay for working at
a high profile company. Would a couple of articles documenting this
meet your requirements? Thanks.

I also suggest that you review the Google Answers pricing guidelines
if you want someone to do a comparison of several companies. Good
luck.

Regardless of whether I can find any job that requires less than 50
hours per week, I'm still interested in the question of whether all of
these firms require roughly the same hours, or whether some require
substantially more or less. That's what I'm trying to get out of this
answer.

In follow up to your comment, I'm asking a seperate question about
working for small companies versus large companies.
