Question ID: 190303
I want to buy (online) a software programme that removes all
(designated) files from my computer. It must be so simple that a
non-IT literate person can use it (highlight and click?) There are
products such as Zdelete but I do not know what the best one is, they
all claim to be great. I had a trial with Zdelete and it was easy to
use but I have no way of knowing how good it is. I do some
confidential work from home and am selling my computer. Under no
circumstances can anyone access my work using software such as
undelete or active uneraser. please can you recommend a product and
provide a url that I can download the software from.

Thank you

Hi Ddominic,

Could you please state what OS you're using?

"...that removes all (designated) files from my computer"

When you say "designated", do you mean "preset" files (files you chose
prior to actual file deletion operation) - OR - are these files you
choose to delete ONLY when using the software?

When you say "all", do you really mean to say ALL -- as in no file is
spared? I'm asking this because we had several customers who say one
thing but are actually defining or looking for another thing.

If you have other details to add, please include these in your reply.
Thank you.

Sorry, to clarify. Not knowing anything about computers it is
difficult to specify. I need to delete all files that I manually
designate eg in MS Word - house.doc, house2.doc etc and I also need
the software to automatically delete information about my visits to
the internet, emails that I send, and any downloads that I make ie
programmes as well as files. This is good on a continual basis for
keeping my computer clean. I have a recovery disk woth my computer so
I guess that I do not need the delete everything option as the
recovery disk would do this for me?

Thanks

I have not been able to get back to you because I have been on
holiday. Some questions. In your recommended answer you state that
the computer will boot more rapidly and run applications more
smoothly. My computer has been specially configured for hard disk
audio recording. Consequently programs such as Norton cannot be used
on my computer because it is continually running in the background and
disrupts audio recording. Does the program you recommend change any
of my computer settings? Does it run continuously or is it a manual
operated system ie I decide when I want to delete files? How will this
utility affect my computer setup? Lastly what was your reason for
selecting this over all other products? Has it received any industry
awards?

Thanks

Thanks for your clarification. I'm sorry for the late reply because I
too just came back from some some personal agenda. Perhaps you did not
explore or read the contents of the links I gave you so I'll try to
answer your clarifications point by point:

"In your recommended answer you state that the computer will boot more
rapidly and run applications more smoothly. My computer has been
specially configured for hard disk audio recording. Consequently
programs such as Norton cannot be used on my computer because it is
continually running in the background and disrupts audio recording."

I believe you are talking Ace Utilities. Ace Utilities is manually
activated. The description "the computer will boot more rapidly and
run applications more smoothly" is also stated on the Download.com
link, http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10184535.html. It will do that
of course if you use the utilities described on Ace Utilities Product
description page ( http://www.acelogix.com/regclean.html ). I think i
don't need to elaborate because each function is pretty well
described. Since you only need the "Delete Files Forever!" of Ace
utilities to delete your selected files forever, your computer will
pretty much function at the same level of performance that you
currently have.

"Does the program you recommend change any of my computer settings?"

It won't if you only use "Delete Files Forever!" and manually assign
files to be deleted. But if you use the other utilities, such as
"Registry Cleaner", "Startup Organizer", 'Duplicate File Finder",
"Tweak Plus", etc., it may have an impact with your computer settings
-- unless of course you activate these utilities read and follow the
instructions very carefully. The key phrase to remember is "read and
follow instructions carefully".

With regards to Norton, it's only an option for you to consider.
Norton Utilities doesn't always run in the background so I think you
have an inaccurate idea about this software. You can select the
programs you want to install and you can fully configure it strictly
for manual activation only. I gave you the idea about Norton because
it has a utility called "Norton Wipe Info" which is included in the
Norton utilities package. It's manually activated and so easy to use.
You can manually assign files to delete forever and you can let it
scan the hard disk space to wipe any remaining hint of a file. I've
been using Norton Wipe since it was included in the Utilities package.
Just like you, I don't want too many active programs so I configured
Norton Utilities not to run in the background. The only Symantec
software active is Norton Antivirus, not Norton utilities.

"Does it run continuously or is it a manual operated system ie I
decide when I want to delete files?

The utility is manually operated.

"Lastly what was your reason for selecting this over all other
products? Has it received any industry awards?"

When I answered your question, the user rating for that program in
Download.com was 97% "thumbs up" out of 61votes. Now it's 97% out of
66 votes. I usually base my selection based on user ratings, not on
any industry awards. The reason is that different award giving bodies
rate products in different ways. Whatis a perfect 5 for one may be a 3
or 4 for another. in the long run, you might even ask "who rates the
award giving bodies or what is the most reliable award giving body" --
bottomline is, if you rely on this your question willnever be
answered. So for me, I usually rely on individual user ratings or
opinions from those who have actually "experienced" the product.
Sometimes I don't depend on this at all. I choose whatever program
will do the job well. So whatever program does that, based on my
requirements, is a perfect 5 for me. The reason I chose this Ace is
because of the ratings since you are more keen on that and its small
size. I also downloaded and tested the file myself and it works fine.
I will not recommend the program if it did not work well with me even
though it received several 5s from the following sites:

File Transit.com - 5 stars
http://www.filetransit.com/view.php?id=10313

Freeserve.com - 5 stars
http://5star.freeserve.com/Utilities/General/aceutilities.html

ZDNet.com - 100% "thumbs up" ZDNet User Opinions
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3302-2094-10184535.html?tag=lst

Tucows.com - voted 4 cows
http://www.tucows.com/system/preview/280915.html

It is understandable that most software developers will claim that
their product is the best, and of course who won't. So if I were you,
don't rely on industry ratings or developer ratings. What may be a
perfect 5 for some may be a totally useless program for you. Choose
whatever works well for you -- THAT is the best. Going back to
Zdelete, if you think that itdoes the job for you then go for it
because that's what you need.

In case you need to see other software to answer your need, you can
search the results on this link:

CNET Networks, Inc.
Search results for wipe
http://download.com.com/sort/3120-20-0-1-3.html?qt=wipe&author=&titlename=&desc=&os=117&swlink=

By the way, I'm in no way representing any product or company in this
answer. The material serve only to inform you and help you to make
your decision. You may or you may not try the suggested products
because you're the one to make the final decision. Thank you.

ddominic,

Since confidentiality is of utmost importance, consider this:

Power down and unplug the computer. Take the cover off and locate the
Hard Drive. Unplug it. Take it to a local discount computer store and
buy a duplicate. Take it home and plug it in just like the old one.
Call a buddy (or ask here) for simple instructions on how to install
Windows-98...

Nothing like a totally different Hard Drive...
