Hello tcchow--
I've done some careful research for you and have your answer.
Donald Rumsfeld is the 21st U.S. Secretary of Defense. He is the
current Secretary of Defense under President Bush.
* Biography
Donald H. Rumsfeld is a former Navy pilot and served as the 13th
Secretary of Defense, White House Chief of Staff, U.S. Ambassador to
NATO, U.S. Congressman and chief executive officer of two Fortune 500
companies.
Rumsfeld is a graduate of Princeton University (A.B., 1954) and served
in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as an aviator and flight instructor. He was
transferred to the Ready Reserve in 1957 and was a drilling reservist
until 1975. He became Secretary of Defense in 1975 and was a captain
in the Retired Reserve in 1989. Rumsfeld was elected to the U.S. House
of Representatives in 1962, representing Illinois. He was re-elected
three times in succession.
In 1969 he resigned from Congress to become the Director of the Office
of Economic Opportunity and Assistant to the President. Then in 1971
he became Counsellor to the President and Director of the Economic
Stabilization Program. He became the U.S. Ambassador to NATO (the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization) from 1973 to 1974. In 1974 he was
the chairman of the transition to the Presidency of Gerald Ford and
became White House Chief of Staff through 1975. He became the youngest
U.S. Secretary of Defense in 1975.
After a tenure as the CEO at G.D. Searle & Co. from 1977 to 1985, he
became the CEO of General Instrument Corporation from 1990 to 1993.
After that, he served as the Chairman of the Board of Gilead Sciences.
In the late 1990s, Rumsfeld ran the U.S. Ballistic Missile Threat
Commission and the U.S. Commission to Assess National Security Space
Management and Organization.
* His political thinking
Rumsfeld is a bonafide Republican. He was the leader of an attempted
Republican revolution deemed "Rumsfeld's Raiders." As a congressman,
he fought for a bill that would have reduced congressional pork. He
was conservative and was always in favor of a strong military,
especially during the Cold War. He supported Civil Rights legislation
but opposed efforts to stop urban poverty.
* His sphere of influence
Rumsfeld is in charge of all actions involving the U.S. Department of
Defense, including actions taken after the September 11 terrorist
attacks. Under Rumsfeld, the Defense Department has reconfigured how
the United States looks at international defense. The worldwide U.S.
command structure was reorganized under Rumsefeld. It's now known as
the Unified Command Plan.
Rumsfeld is responsible for a large department and reports directly to
the President of the United States. In his position of Secretary of
Defense, Rumsfeld serves on the President's Cabinet.
* His agenda
Rumsfeld's political agenda is conservative. He believes in a strong
Defense Department and in a New World Order of sorts. He believes in
fighting terrorism so the United States won't again be a victim.
He believes in human rights. He believes every human is equal and
should be treated respectfully unless they don't respect others. He
reports directly to the President and shares an agenda similar to that
of President Bush.
