My problem concerns the installation of an Intel Pro/1000 MT server
card into a Novell 4.11 Server.
I am replacing an existing Dlink card
a)because since a thunderstorm which caused a network crash a few
weeks ago we've been getting occasional glitches on the network.
Typically workstations freeze and the network goes down with or
without any messages. On rebooting, if any user was editing data, the
relevant files are damaged and require restoring from backups.
Sometimes the damage is not obvious (knackered indexes for example);
so to play safe I am rebuilding all relevant indexes even if no damage
is reported. The whole "fix" puts the system out of use for about an
hour. Even at once a week, this gets tedious. However, it happened two
days running last week so my hardware engineer suggested we'd better
start replacing the most likely suspect components. (I am also
replacing all the workstation network cards)
and
b)because I am advised that the new card is considerably more powerful
and resilient than the Dlink adapter and will allow us, if we wish to,
to upgrade the network to 1000 mbits as opposed to the 100 it now is.
The server correctly detected the card and tried to install the
appropriate driver (which I had previously copied onto the server from
the CD that came with the card)
The first time it failed, the OS helpfully advised me to increase some
Server Parameters which I duly did.
The second time it failed, I had given it slot number 2 because the
dlink was still using slot 1 (I intended leaving it in as a "backup").
It reported that it couldn't find the adapter. So I removed the Dlink
and assigned slot 1 to the Intel card.
Now it detects the card and the link and begins to load the driver but
fails with the following error message:
"HIN (000000004H) Does Not Exist".
I have searched the web and the Novell online documentation for a clue
as to what this means or what I should do about it and can find
neither.
So the questions are:
What does that error message mean? and
What am I supposed to do to fix it? |
