Hello nrhr-ga:
It was a pleasure to do research for you. As I myself am a great
enthusiast of elegant hotels, I thought that the best starting point
to start will be the Dorley Kinderseley Guide to 'The Best Places to
Stay in Europe'. I always consulted this to find truly charming hotels
for my own stay. BUT as a Goggle researcher, I myself did extensive
research and than consulted the hotel guide so that my opinion is not
dictated by the guide or any other "one" source.
It was a little difficult finding the perfect type of hotel in
Gothenburg i.e. the type of hotel that you would want BUT I am
including hotels that are elegant and may fall close to your
specifications.
I am not providing you a detailed list because I did my research and
believe in quality rather than quantity. If you need a review of my
'selection criteria', please ask and I will be happy to follow up.
Taking into account your desired criteria, following is the list of
hotels to be considered:
STOLKHOLM

TOP CHOICES
Lady Hamilton Hotel (34 rooms)
http://www.lady-hamilton.se/eng/lady/lady_index.html
This hotel is my personal favorite in a quite old town neighborhood.
The Lady Hamilton Hotel is one big museum, a dramatization of both
Swedish and English history. The Class A listed building has been
around ever since 1470. The cozy Lady Hamilton's rooms are decorated
in a very romantic style. You'll get a sense of the 1470 origins of
this hotel when you use the luxurious sauna, which encompasses the
stone-rimmed well that formerly supplied the building's water.

Surbrunnsgatan 20
Stockholm 113 4

Certainly one of the most exclusive hotel in Stockholm. Small and
choice, this is an upscale, very charming inn that occupies what was
built in the 1730s as a private house, about a half mile north of the
commercial heart of Stockholm. If you stay here, PLEASE go to the
restaurant. Some people just stop by to see it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Hotel Esplande (32 rooms)

phone 46 8 663 07 40; email hotel@esplanadesto.se
Strandvägen 7A
Stockholm 114 56
Known for its atmosphere, this hotel is situated directly on the water
and just across the street from Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theater,
Hotel Esplanade is a beautiful hotel with a real touch of old
Stockholm. It was originally a guest house operated by an elderly
woman, and the current owners have sought to maintain the homey
ambience.
Rica City Hotel Gamla Stan (52 rooms)
http://www.rica.cityhotels.se/engelsk/index1.html
This is a small, cozy, restored house dating from the seventeenth
century. This small hotel is centrally located in a calm part of the
magnificent Old Town. Each of its 51 rooms is uniquely decorated.
Although, the rooms are well decorated and nice but they are small.
GOTHENBURG
==========
TOP CHOICE
Victor (28 rooms, 16 suites)
http://www.victors-hotel.com/eindex.html
This is a small hotel by the sea. The rooms are very nicely furnished
with a touch of luxury. It is located in the city center. The hotel
staff shows exclusiveness, quality and service can be combined with
consideration, friendliness and reasonable prices.

My Personal Recommendations

Hotel Eggers (67 rooms)
A Best Western Hotel
The second-oldest hotel in Gothenburg was built in 1859, predating the
Swedish use of the word to describe a building with rooms for
travelers. Today it's better than ever, with stained-glass windows,
ornate staircases, and wood paneling. All rooms are individually
furnished and beautifully appointed, often with large bathrooms.
Also see http://www.gotacanal.se/EN/index_en.htm for a yacht style
living and city tour.
I will also recommend Hotel Pseidon at http://www.hotelposeidon.com.
Its a family run small hotel with great service in a quiet
neighborhood. One of my friends have nice memories of this hotel.
I hope you will find the review helpful. If you need to clarify
anything, please do so as I found this research very entertaining and
knowledgeable.

Hello Nancy:
In selecting the best hotels, I looked for the following unique
characteristics:
1. It has to be small.
2. It has to have a good central location, preferably in the old town.
3. It has to be in a quite neighborhood, away from the hustle and
bustle of the city.
4. It has to be elegant in its design, decor and service.
5. It should cater to the discerning travelers and guests i.e. it
shouldn't be a party place or a place which is known by everyone. (So
as to keep away the twentysomethng tourists, Eurotrash and crowd).
The top hotels in Stockholm fall into that category. Highly
recommended hotel might be missing one of the above mentioned
qualities.
As for Gothenburg, It was difficult to pull out a hotel with all of
the above qualities so I suggested hotels that come close to
fulfilling the above characteristics.
I didn't know about the hotel J. It would definitely be somewhere on
my list. I didn't review it but it sounds great. Sorry! Dont have any
clue about the other one.
If you need any further help, please let me know.
Sincerely,
leader-ga.
