Question ID: 191387
I recently (one month ago or so) downloaded from Download.com a
program that would allow me to copy DVD's for backup purposes. I had
video that I had burned onto DVD and wanted to make exact duplicates.
The computer I am using (a Sony VAIO) has a CD-ROM drive and a DVD-R,
CDRW drive.

Upon expiration of the temporary period of use I decided that the
program was not exactly what I wanted. I have tried to remove it
(using windows xp add and remove software) and whenever I have done so
the program has been removed but has also deleted access to my CD and
DVD drives. It seems as though the drivers get deleted. I have
restored the drives by going back to a restore point on the PC but in
addition to bringing back the drives it also restores the program.

How can I get rid of this program without deleting the drivers? I am
not all that computer savvy ... only enough to be dangerous to myself
... so please make your answer simple (but not to simple :)).

Thanks.

Greetings, smk219!

What is the model number of your Sony VAIO? If necessary, you can
check the list here to see if one of these matches your computer:
http://www.sonyspareparts.com/sony-parts.asp

Did the CD-ROM and DVD-R,CDRW drive come to you already installed in
the computer, or are they components that you've added? Do you know
the brand name and model number of these drives? (If they came with
your computer, your Owner's or User's Manual should probably contain
this information.)

Thanks,

The computer is a Sony Vaio RX-580 ... the specs are listed at
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/specs/desktops/pcvrx580.pdf

The drives came with the computer. The DVD drive is a Pioneer ... I
am not sure what type of drive the CD drive is but I can check when I
get home if more information is needed.

smk219,

According to the Sony Support site, your PC came with Microsoft
Windows XP Operating System, which contains drivers for your CD and
DVD drives. Have you tried reinstalling those drivers from the System
disks that you received with your computer?
