We have a Sun Ultra 1 running Solaris 7. There is a hardware error
(system shuts down unexpectedly), that is seemingly not related to the
hard drive. If we pull the drive and put it in a standard PC, should
the MB properly recognize a hard drive, boot, etc. with the Solaris
operating system installed or does Sun have some sort of proprietary
hardware (motherboard?) or software block that would prevent it from
being properly recognized?

Most likely, and this is knowledge rather than research based, the
drive will not boot as you expect. I would guess that at the very
least, the drive is formatted as UFS, which is not necessarily a
prohibiting factor. However, the BIOS and ROMs that the installed
version of Solaris is expecting from the Ultra system will not be in
place in the PC, and thus you'll probably receive errors of some sort.
