Thanks for asking!

By searching under "castle architecture" I've located a number of
sites that will provide the information you're seeking about castles
and their characteristics. I've also included links to the Google
Directory, where you'll find results by architectural styles
(periods). We have many researchers from around the world. I'll also
them to offer comments about a castle close by their locations.

When I was a high school exchange student, I had the pleasure of
seeing the Burg Altena every day. We had our Abitur (graduation)
party there, and my going away party as well. The castle is one of
the many things I miss about my adopted home:

Altena, Ansichten von heute

(The third link will also lead to Altena's smaller castle, Burg
Holtzbrinck, located in the Mittenstadt. Today, it's an art gallery
and small orchestra perfomance venue!)

Die Burg Altena is located in Altena, in the German state of
Nordrhein-Westfalen, on a high bluff overlooking the River Lenne.
Construction of the castle began in approximately 1002 AD. Among her
distinguishing features are her two turrets, a well appointed
residence area and a large central courtyard. In many places, the
native rock was left undisturbed - she was built to accomodate
existing rock formations, giving her foundations remarkable character.

I've provided the links for you to see the pictures. If you're
interested in the history of this fantastic castle, you can use

Larre has given you so many great links, you may not want any more,
but I couldn't resist adding some information about castles in
Scotland, where I live.

The biggest and most famous Scottish castles are at Edinburgh and
Stirling. Check them out by clicking on links here:
http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/index/op_ourproperties.htm

But there is a smaller kind of castle, very typical of Scotland,
called a tower house, see:
http://www.castles-of-britain.com/castless.htm

Some tower houses are still lived in, like this:
http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/index.cfm/property/685.cfm

Others are ruined:
http://www.castleuk.net/castle_lists_scotland/4/scallowaycastle.htm

Some have changed from century to century,e.g.:

This site is full of interesting information about British castles:

You may also be interested in learning about Hundred Oaks Castle in
Winchester, Tennessee. An article about the transformation from
farmhouse to castle is located at
http://huntsville.about.com/library/weekly/aa082100a.htm and continued
at http://huntsville.about.com/blcastle.htm. It's a cool place and
one I visited many time in the 1960s.

Head for the Far East. Some of the most beautiful castles ever built
were in Japan. This great website provides click-to-enlarge photos
and excellent information about each of them. A wonderful website to
visit if you like castles.
