I am looking to buy either a JVC GR-DVL 355, or 166 (because I can
purchase manufacturer refurbished models within my budget). However, I
obviously do not want to proceed only to find that my computer at home
cannot handle them. What are the specifications required to run them
at full features?

My PC runs Windows 98SE but the processor is marginally less than
powerful enough to support most run-of-the-mill webcams. However, it
has no problem with my Fuji digital camera as all it does is link to
it with USB and download pictures straight on to the hardrive.

I see that the digividicams use cassettes for moving pictures. What
type of file is generated, and how is it transferred to the PC? I
don't know what a dv firewire thing is that the assistant at the shop
showed me a port for, but am pretty sure there's no hole by that name
in the back of my PC.

I guess it comes down to whether
- the digividicam needs to 'play' the clip down to the PC
pr
- it can simply download/dump it ?

There is a 100 gigabyte hardrive, and sufficient memory to play any
avi, mpeg etc that I have attempted from other sources, so that aspect
shouldn't be a problem.

My main concern is with the processor, and whether the digividicam
will ask it to do the same kind of thing that the webcam tried to ask
it to do, unsuccessfully

It might be helpful for reseachers if you post the details of your PC, such as:
Processor type and clock speed (Ex. Athlon 1.3 ghz)
RAM
Video Card type
Presence of any other video add-in card (video editor, TV tuner, etc.)
Hard drive size and speed

Thank you.

I see the problem now - with the still digitalcamera it is just
downloading a static file from the memory card. With a digividicam it
will have to play the file off the cassette to download it, and I
think that is going to be where the PC falls down...

Pentium II 232
ATI 3D Rage Pro - Mach64: RagePro Rev
192 mb RAM

I hope that makes sense?

Talked to a friend who has a friend, and it seems that my processor
cannot handle the handling software. Guess thats the end of that.
Either I get a new motherboard (no idea how to do that), a new pc (can
ONLY afford that, so can't afford digividicam if I have to buy new
PC)...
