Dear ag77,

I have found some pictures of Turkish Crescents. However, those
pictures do not show the traditional Turkish version of that
instrument, but rather the today better-known form it received in
Western Europe. Also, it proved impossible to find pictures of Turkish
Crescents in museums and collections. So I need to know:
- are "Europeanized" Turkish Crescents what you are looking for?
- how important is it for you to know the museums and collections?

Scriptor

thanx for your question. yes european is absolutely fine. the topkapi
palace in istanbul could still be closed for renovation. that's
probably irrelavent, but icouldn't even find out what they don't have
because,in 1999, the palace museum was closed. most crescents, all
styles, are probably in european museums---as usual. the shrine to
music museum in vermillion south dakota has a good crescent. photo
available?? it would be helpful to know who has
what, specifically.historical percussion is my main focus.i keep
detailed imformation for replication, articles, etc. good luck.thank
you.todd.

Dear ag77,

I will try to collect the best photographic material I can find on the
Web. For your information: The best way to get very detailed and
recent information on Turkish Crescents would be contacting the German
Army: Surprising as it might sound, every German army band has at
least one of them, and it is actually used. Since the 18th century,
when Prussian artilley musicians adopted it, it is typical for German
military bands.

Dear ag77,

Here are the best pictures of Turkish Crescents I could find. I
decided to also inclue current German examples, since the German type
of this instrument - the so-called Schellenbaum - has hardly seen any
changes since the mid-19th century. Actually, changes were almost
exclusively made concerning heraldic details: The "horse tails" at the
crescent's edges are colored black-red-gold now, like the Federal
German Flag. Also, the eagle on top of the instrument holds a flag
with the Federal Eagle. Older Crescents had other colors and insignia.
Please note that the eagle on top is an interesting exception of the
rule: It's still the Prussian Eagle, like 150 years ago.
For each Turkish Crescent, I provided you contact information for the
owners; so if you like, you can request additional information or
photographs directly from them.
