I'm trying to find the pictures of the toppling of Saddam Hussein's
statue from a distance. I have read several articles which refer to
these "pictures" (tanks at the entrance to the square; few people
available) and even to a series of pictures showing the American setup
of the photo-op. But have been anable to see those peictures for
myself.

Hi there,

Most people would be refering to this article, which for me was an
eye-opener:

The pulling down of the Statue was a staged media event
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/NYI304A.html

Here's the picture without the drawings:
http://blog.kynn.com/shock/graphics/statuekilling0.jpg

Here's a video clip of the statue being pulled down:
http://68.1.17.8/informationclearinghouse3/ustroopsstatue.wmv

Amazingly:

"Marines say that the US flag draped over Saddam Hussein's statue was
the flag that was flying over the Pentagon on 11 September 2001."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/2935641.stm

The media had definitely convinced me it was a Berlin Wall type event.
Just like every couple of days there have been unconfirmed reports of
weapons of mass-destruction being found... which never get confirmed!

Search strategy: I saw the long distance pic a few days ago, and used
keywords I recall from reading the article - statue propaganda hundred
people tanks

Best wishes,

Thank you. Why isnt this image getting more play? Can you tell me
what it was that was pulling the cable that actually pulled down the
statue? I noted also wht "wasn't" happeninbg -- no one jumped up and
down or cheered when the statue came down.

The first link in my answer, which strangely didn't show up as a link, mentions:

"A U.S. mechanized vehicle is used to pull the statue of Saddam from it's base"

robertskelton, the article you quoted says this: "a quick glance of
the long-shot photo shows something more AKIN TO a carefully
constructed media event tailored for the television cameras."
[emphasis mine]

They're pointing out that because there was not a large crowd around
the statue when you see it from a distance that it is "akin to a
carefully constructed media event tailored for the television cameras"
-- that that it actually WAS. We can't judge whether or not this is
true just because one anti-globalization website paints it in that
way. Being an anti-globalization website it is already biased.

This article is an eye opener for me in that biased writings like this
can be propagated so easily and quickly.

If it was a media event that was "carefully constructed" -- why
weren't there MORE people in the shots? Why did the media report it
that way? If it was carefully constructed I'm sure the media would
have found more people to put in that square for a photo op and to
sensationalize the whole event.

But you know the media -- their job is to sensationalize ordinary
happenings or small events. They seem to have taken to this war with
perfect gusto, complete with theme music and colorful animated
graphics.

I would add that while only one statue tear down was widely seen on
the news, there have been MANY similar events--both before and after
the most talked about one.
