Well, it would be easier to provide information, if one knew where you
currently lived and something of your cv (resumé if you're American),
but London is probably the centre of the European art market, and is
an obvious choice if your first language is English. Being a woman
should be no obstacle to employment or self-employment in London. But
obtaining employment in a London commercial art gallery is by no means
easy, and such jobs are much in demand. First, you would need some
qualification, preferably a relevant degree, such as in art-history;
at the very least you would need to demonstrate good knowledge of
paintings, sculpture etc. Experience in sales, computer- skills, and
media-relations might also be called for. Regrettably, the London art
scene seems to be particularly snobbish, with who you know probably
counting as much as what you know; many gallery staff come from the
upper social classes, and physical attractiveness also seems to help.
(These last factors may not be so relevant in other European
locations.) As regards setting up your own art dealership, then in
addition to the foregoing issues to do with experience and
qualifications, there would be the perennial problem of start-up
capital, though how much you would need would obviously depend on the
type of art you envisaged selling.
