I require to do 'a search' on a company registered in the Cayman
Islands.

I am guessing that there is no on-line facility but can anyone find me
an agent who can do the job without costing an arm and a leg?

This would be a search of the register of companies, I believe.

We do company searches all over the world and quite often in the
Cayman islands

This is the quickest, cheapest and most effective route to take.

Preferably call up or fax 

Registrar of Companies, Ground Floor, Tower Building, Grand Cayman,
BWI
Tel: 1(345) 949-7999 Fax: (345) 949-0969

Ask for company search/registrar department and they should give you
the details over the phone or by fax. Normally you will only get:

- company type (IBC normally for offshore registered)
- name of registered agent
- date started
- registration number
- capital and no. of shares
- Good Standing Status

Write to agent of company if you want more details - directors,
shareholders, parent or affiliated companies - but, because of strict
disclosure laws, unlikely to get unless you have a convincing
bona-fide reason for your enquiry.
