I'm just curious how to set up a search box so visitors can search our
site. We've been using an outside one (Picosearch) but I'm tired of
having their logo on there. What does setting up our own require as
far as coding, software, etc.? Thanks.

I have found a potential search solution for your site but want to
make sure it will work for you before I post it as an answer:

The search script is completely free and is "...commented on each line
of code to make it easier for a beginner to follow or to customize."

However it requires a server capable of running ASP scripts (it
currently has been tested on "...IIS 4 on NT4, IIS 5 on Windows 2000,
and IIS5.1 on Windows XP Pro..." and to run the advanced version
(which has additional capabilities) it is necessary to have VB
Scripting Engine 5 or above installed on the server.

Provided you can run ASP, this script will provide you with a
completely free search solution. Let me know if your server meets the
requirements and I will post the link to the script in my answer.

Greetings, esarkissian!

I can provide you with information for an excellent search facility
for free, with no software or coding required. Would you consider that
an acceptable Answer?

rmn,

I'm not sure what the server is capable of running, as our website is
hosted by Earthlink. I would think so, since they are one of the
biggest, if not the biggest ISP. Would this script(s) you speak of be
possible to upload to the proper location using DreamWeaver?

aceresearcher,

please correct me if I'm wrong, but what you're suggesting almost
sounds like a "cut-and-paste" script using an outside resource
(another website) for searches. If that's what you are suggesting,
that's not what I'm looking for, as stated in my question.

Thanks.

While it would depend on what version of Dreamweaver you are using,
the most recent version (Dreamweaver MX) does have ASP support. I
checked with Earthlink, and found that they currently use UNIX based
hosting (in other words the script I found would not work). I do have
a list of other UNIX compatible scripts (which Dreamweaver would
support), however they all must be purchesed. About how much would
you be willing to pay for such a script (keeping in mind that some
programming ability or experience with CGI or PHP scripts is necessary
to set them up)?

I just came across this site search engine that will work with the
Earthlink hosting you have. Take a look at it and see if it's what
you want, and whether or not you have the technical ability to install
it.

If this is what you are looking for, let me know and I'll post it as
an answer.

Hi I locked this question without realizing rmn had already answered
it with the exact answer I was going to give. That search engine is
great and the autoinstall option makes it by far the easiest unix
program installation I've ever done. I recommend it. -shiva777
