(1) Google Answers Researchers are not allowed to provide a private
email address. May I also note, that given Mr. Salem age, it might be
likely that he rarely uses email, and a "conventional" mailing would
be preferred.

(2) Do you read Arabic or are you looking for English translations of
his writings?

Thank you for your response.

With regard to your questions:

(1) Yes, of course. I hoped there might be some kind of general
contact information for him or his representitive.

(2) I would be interested in both, an english translation of his work
and/or in Arabic. They need not necessarily be the same play either. I
want to get a few examples of his work.

Hello lemonsky and Whew!...this is a tough one.

I just wanted to let you know that at least one of us (probably more)
is still looking into this.

All I have so far is a reference to a work of his translated into
English and published in a journal that may be accessible to you
through library loan or the EBSCO on-line database:

Title: From Amusing Encounters with Genies and Demons (HIWAR dahik
ma'a jinn wa-'afarit)

Massachusetts Review, Winter2001, Vol. 42 Issue 4, p585, 5p
Abstract: Presents an excerpt from the book 'Hiwar dahik ma'a jinn
wa-'afarit,' by Ali Salem, translated by Raymond Stock.

I'll let you know if anything else turns up.

I don't know where you're located, but apparently the Research Branch
of the NY Public Library has a copy of this book.

Hello lemonsky,

This by no means answers your question, but could give you some leads
to follow. I don’t know Arabic so was only able to follow an English
trail.

I found one reference to a published play:

TITLE = Bufih. English.
TITLE = The buffet, and, The well of wheat / Ali Salem ; translated by
John Waterbury with and introduction by Nadia R. Farag Badawi.
AUTHOR = Salim, Ali.
IMPRINT = [Cairo] : General Egyptian Book Organization, 1991.
ALT NAME = Salim, Ali. Bir al-qamh. English.
ALT NAME = Faraj, Nadiyah Rauf.
From accessions list of Ohio State University
http://www.lib.ohio-state.edu/mejweb/westac32.htm

However, searching (in English) the site of the General Egyptian Book
Organization did not bring up any hits for this work (tried title
search and author search). I wonder if this and perhaps other works
were removed from the lists when Ali Salem got into trouble for his
book about Israel.

“Still not exactly welcomed in the Egyptian press, Mr. Salem
contributes columns to the respected Arab-language newspaper Al Hayat,

I thought perhaps this would be a route to contact him.
Al Hayat has a website http://english.daralhayat.com/ (English) and
www.alhayat.com/ (Arabic)
Contact details are only given for its Lebanon office:
Dar Al Hayat
Dar Al Hayat Bldg; Maarad St; Riad Solh Sq.
PO Box: 11-1242
Beirut; Lebanon
Tel: +961 1 987990/1/2/3/4
Fax: +961 1 983921
Editors: dhwebeditor@alhayat.com
Inquiries: information@alhayat.com

I did find an address for the publishers in London at British Telecom
directory enquiries http://www.bt.com/
Al Hayat Publishing Co. Ltd
(020) 7605 2000
66, Hammersmith Rd
London, W14 8UD

And, if you want a very long shot, I did find some rather old
information:
“Each day, Salem can be found at the Caroline Hotel in Mohandiseen
("It's my enclave."). He reads the papers, drinks Turkish coffee and
drums up new ideas.”
Middle East Times , article about Salem from 1997(?)
http://www.metimes.com/issue26/commu/1salem.htm

So I found the address of the hotel, perhaps you could try writing to
him c/o this address?:
Name: Caroline Crillon Hotel -B R
City: Cairo
Address: 49, Syria St., Mohandessin, Cairo
Phone: +20-2-3465101

Lemonsky,

I'll hope you'll check in on this question, even though it's expired,
because I finally heard from a source in Egypt who told me:

Greetings from Cairo. Many thanks for your interest in the works of
Ali
Salem--no doubt Egypt's greatest modern satirist--and one of the
country's most enlightened thinkers, as well.

You can reach him by e-mail at:

Salemplaywright@hotmail.com

As you may know from his interviews on US television (including Tom
Friedman's recent Discovery/NYTimes-TV documentary, "Searching for the
Roots
of 9/11," which aired in late March/early April), Mr. Salem speaks
English fluently. I'm sure he'd be glad to hear from you.
