I keep getting these spam-like pop-ups in windows xp.

I know that are done via SMB somehow. I know it can be stopped by
blocking certain ports on my firewall, but I don’t want to do that.

Is there a small windows program that will do it?

Do you have any legitimate reason for wanting to recieve SMB pop-ups?
If not the easiest way is to simply disable the service in the Control
Panel.

If you'd like more info, I'd be happy to let you know what to do.

Otherwise, there are programs that claim to do this (most seem to be
sold through pop-up spam) but as far as I am aware they all do one of
two things: disable the service, or block the port.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed with this.

I don't recommend going the non-firewall route (or, presumably, TCP/IP
filtering)... The only real alternative is to shut down the messenger
service.

There's only thing this "Messenger Service" is good for: Sending
messages to other computers on a local-area network. To test it, click
"Start", then "Run", and in the box, type ' net send 127.0.0.1 "This
is a test message" '. No harm in disabling it if you aren't actively
using it.

To disable, first, you must access "Administrative Tools" under
control panel. You may open it in one of the following ways: 1) Type
"Administrative Tools" in an address bar, such as IE's or "My
Computers". 2) Click "Start", then "Control Panel", then
"Administrative Tools".

From there, open "Services". Locate "Messneger" in this list,
right-click it, then click "Stop". Right-click again, click
"Properties", and in "Startup Type", click "Disabled".

As Sycophant says, the "close question" is the one. Have a good day.
