I seek an order of precedence chart of US Navy ribbons that can be
printed directly from a web site onto a SINGLE 8.5 x 11 sheet of
paper. None of the charts I've been able to find online numbers fewer
than two pages, these for example:
www.dod.mil/specials/ribbons/Navy1.html
www.usanavy.com/administration/personnel/awards/medals/medals_ribbons.htm
I have also not been able to manipulate those saved web pages such
that I can compress either of them onto a single page. Using MS Word's
"make it fit" feature, for example, does not do the trick. Though I
realize I could print them out, then do a cut & paste job with
scissors and tape, the result would not be optimal. There must be a
single-page ribbons precedence chart somewhere on the web, but I've
not been able to find it. |

Hi nautico,
Using your link www.dod.mil/specials/ribbons/Navy1.html , I got all of
the ribbons to fit on one page by doing this:
File / Print Preview / Scale: 40% / Print
Is that an acceptable solution?

That didn't work for me. I don't have a 40% option at print preview.
The closest to that is 50%, and when I select it, the two pages print
exactly as they had before.

I have a different print preview set-up from yours and that of
hummer-ga. Thus, I'm going to rely on your honesty and post a link to
an alternate page that is smaller than the first one you've cited.
(The link to the second page you've cited does not seem to work.)
"U.S. Navy medals and ribbons"
U.S. Navy Office of Information
http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ribbons/navy_ribbons.html
This page works for me, with a feature on my Canon S300 printer called
Fit-to-Page Printing that can shrink a legal-size web page to a
letter-sized printed page. If the page works for you, please let me
know and I'll post it as an answer. (That's why I said I'm relying on
your honesty -- normally, I don't post a link except in an answer,
because otherwise the customer could decide not to pay for my work.)

I'm confused. First of all, I've no reason not to be honest with you
about the scale choices I see in Print Preview. That drop-down menu
includes only the following and there is no provision for typing in
any other value: 500%, 200%, 150%, 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 10%. Page
Width, Whole Page, Two Pages. I'm using the latest build of IE6 (SP1)
and operating under Win XP Pro. When I enter scale values less than
25%, the only thing that happens is that the TWO pages shrink in size
on the Print Preview screen; nothing within those pages is made
smaller so that the two pages of data would appear on a single page.
I'm using an HP all-in-one printer. Though I suppose I could research
the printer manual in an effort to determine how to compress the two
pages into one, I would much prefer to do this from my desktop, using
software commands. Do you have any other ideas before I explore the
alternative of using buttons on the printer?

I hope that you did not take my comment as impugning your honesty; to
the contrary, if I didn't have reason to believe you were honest, I
wouldn't have posted anything!
In any event, I don't think it should be too difficult to check the
printer settings, to see if they will do the trick. On Internet
Explorer, go to <File / Print>, then click <Properties>. You will
then see the properties for your printer. Hopefully, there will be a
tab such as "Main" or "Page Setup", where there will be an option that
allows you to make the web page fit, or to choose the printing type
(e.g. normal size printing, fit-to-page printing). If you change one
of those settings and apply the change, you should be able to change
it back and apply the previous setting after you've printed the page.

Aha! Now I see where you saw the 40% option--in Netscape (which I
almost never use). And you were right about being able to get that
chart on one page. In fact I did so using the 50% scale option.
Thanks, and case closed!

I had previously tried those suggestions in IE, but couldn't get the
"scale to fit" feature to work. In any event, I've now been successful
in Netscape, so thanx again for your persistence!
