Question ID: 192723
I'm having trouble networking a Dell Lattitude laptop.
I'm using a Xircom RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100 card.

The purpose of the network is to share an internet connection through
a main computer. The main computer and one of the client computers are
working properly.

The laptop is another client computer. I've run diagnostics that
Xircom included, and there were no problems with the card or the
drivers.

The laptop is not recognized on the network. When I plug in the
network cable, it shows the lan connection under connection settings,
but I can't see any of the other computers on the network, or connect
to the internet (I have run network setup wizard.) When I try to
repair the connection by right clicking on it, it tells me that it
"cannot renew the ip address".

Any ideas? Thanks

Dell Lattitude running Windows XP SP1. All comps running Windows XP
SP1.
Xircom Realport CardBus Ethernet 10/100.
Using standard ethernet cables.

I'm not sure what information you guys would need to help resolve this
problem, so a clarification would be appreciated.

Hi skyhooked,
Did you recently use the "System Restore" feature of Windows XP to
restore the laptop to a prior setting?

Howdy,

Yes, it has been used. It was sent back 1 week previous to when it
stopped working, no results. I tried doing that twice, back 2 weeks,
but to no avail.

I've also tested a desktop computer on the cable that the laptop is
networked to, and there it worked fine. I'm pretty sure the problem is
with the computer.

Thanks

Hi skyhooked,
Microsoft recently released a patch for a problem with SP1 unable to
connect to the Internet after a system restore. Use another computer
and visit Microsoft's Windows Update site to download the patch, it
should be one of the critical ones.
I'm sorry I'm unable to give a link, since I have already installed
this patch, so I can't find a link to the page describing the problem.

OK would you by any chance be trying to connect to the internet
through a broadband connection?

Have you tried right clicking on the lan connection and click
properties and then advanced and the turning off the Windows Firewall.

Are the subnet and lan address the same or at least are both computers
on the same lan address sub set?

Have you named both computers with the same workgroup as the both need
to be the smae.

Finally have ou tried using the Network Wizard?

Have you tried going in an adjusting your TCP/IP settings. Are you
using DHCP. May also want to check your subnet mask.
