I realize this isn't a typical question, but I've tried everything
else I can think of.
I'm looking for cheap (cheap!) nautical charts of the UK, any age, any
publisher, any level of detail. Their purpose is to add color to a
book I'm writing, not for navigational purposes, so dropping a couple
of grand for the latest electronic charts seems a bit excessive. Any
help or pointers would be appreciated. |

Glasseyed,
Are you interested in digital or paper nautical charts?
Thanks

Hi, bobbie7
I'd prefer paper (as I said, they're not for navigating), but will
consider a digital bargain. I'm aware of the Imray chartpaks, but I'd
have to buy several dozen to cover my areas of particular interest,
which I should have mentioned in my first query: South of England,
esp. the Solent; Clyde Estuary.
As I also mentioned, they can be any age. I haven't had any luck
finding used charts, but I wouldn't care about the odd coffee stain.
I'm only trying to add a little 'verisimilitude' to a novel that
contains a fair bit of yacht racing.
Hope this helps (as for what constitutes a bargain, it's like beauty:
we know it when we see it). Glasseyed

Hi again
I hate to say it, but that's a collector's price for a chart which
covers only a tiny portion of my area of interest. I'd be much better
off biting the bullet and buying the latest software pack.

Marine Chart Services may have just the chart you require as they
carry cancelled and used nautical charts for very low prices
This site will give you access to many thousands of navigation charts,
and publications, in different formats. Prices vary from as little as
£2.60 (for cancelled charts) to £16.70 (the current cost of new
British Admiralty charts).

Thanks again, but
Perhaps this was an impossible request anyway. I'm probably better off
with the Imray chartpaks. There at least you can specify exactly what
areas are wanted and, to a certain extent, the level of detail. Or
maybe I should just reduce the local color, and make my races more
generic!
Since I haven't sold (or finished) the story yet, it might be a long
time before I can write off the cost of 'research materials.'
