I have found citations for "The opposite of analysis is synthesis,"
and citations for "Synthesis is the opposite of analysis," but none
for "The justification of analysis is synthesis." Is it possible that
you are misremembering this quote?

If you are certain of the wording, it might help if you could tell us
approximately when you and under what circumstances you encountered
the quote. Any details would be useful; sometimes even the tiniest
clue can lead to success when trying to track down a quotation.

I don't rememer the context or the time period. It could be a
paraphrase of the original quote. I've been using it so long I could
be the one who said (this way), for all I know.

The idea is that research and scientific exploration is only really
relevant if it (eventually) leads to applications, problem solving
and/or the creation of something new. It follows from this that basic
research is done by invetigators who can't think of any practical use
for the knowledge they are accumulating, and that the highest use of
research results is to apply them in ways that benefit society.

Here's one thats close:

"Basic research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing."
-- Wernher Von Braun

Good luck.
