Hi francomari,
I have received responses from two US libraries regarding the singer
at Franklin D. Roosevelt's inaugurations. I will post their replies
below.
The first reply is from the FDR Library:
"This is in response to your e-mail to the Franklin D. Roosevelt
Library requesting information on who sang the national anthem at the
inaugurations.
We have searched our collections and found nothing on a soloist at any
of the inaugurations. The Marine Band played the national anthem at
the end of the ceremonies. We did find that Rosa Ponselle sang the
anthem at the inaugural ball in 1933.
Sincerely,
Supervisory Archivist"
The following reply is from the Fort Worth Public Library:
"I have checked the following sources to answer your question, but
there is nothing about a singer at any of the four inaugurations.
First-March 4, 1933
Checked Time Magazine, March 13, 1933, pages 11-12
Second-January 20, 1937
Checked Time Magazine,Feb.1,1937, pages 9-10
Third-January 20, 1941
Checked Time Magazine, January 27,1941, pages 11-12
Fourth-January 20, 1945
Checked Newsweek, January 29, 1945, page 40
It may be that there was a singer at some of the other celebrations or
ceremonies.
Sincerely yours,
East Reference Desk
Fort Worth Public Library"
Are you certain that there was indeed a singer at the inaugurations of
Franklin D. Roosevelt? From the replies I have posted there seems to
be no evidence of any performers besides the US Marine Band.
I hope this information provided was helpful. Please let me know if I
can be of any further assistance.
Best regards,
