Greetings Aknalb:

There are a few reasons why you may have been overlooked in an SE
spider. You have great keywords and you have listed "Prague" over 20
times. Normally, three is considered acceptable because a search
engine may think you are "keyword stuffing" by listing "prague so many
times. see the page at http://www.sevendesignavenue.com/setips13.htm
for an explanation of keyword stuffing, sometimes referred to as "spam
indexing."

Here are your keywords:

"prague apartment, apartment in prague, prague apartment rental,
prague apartment rent, accommodation apartment prague, prague
accommodation, hotel accommodation in prague, cheap accommodation
prague, cheap accommodation in prague, accommodation apartment prague,
prague hotel, hotel in prague, cheap hotel in prague, prague discount
hotel, prague hotel accommodation, prague travel, travel in prague,
travel package prague, czech republic, czech republic hotel, travel to
czech republic, prague czech republic, czech republic accommodation,
vacation prague, prague vacation package, prague vacation rental"

I would suggest you tweak the keywords to be something like:

"keywords" content="prague,apartment rental,short term rental,short
term lease czech rrepublic,accommodation,prague apartment,for
rent,hotel,motel,inn,prague llodging,cheap, inexpensive,prague
hotel,discount,travel, travel package"

You may repeat a word more than once but your keywords were overly
repetitive. Also, I would add the same keywords in other languages
besides English. You know your client base so choose their languages,
too, for more exposure.

You've done well on the text because you've repeated your keywords
there. I would also suggest that you add to the alt tags in the
photos. EX: Podskalska studio apartment Prague rental Czech Republic
- just to have additional keywords in the alt tags. Also, your header
is an image and search engine spiders do not read words in an image.
You can alt tag the header, too, to reflect your firm's name and even
a short title/explanation.

To further reflect your keywords in the text, you may consider
changing your first paragraph "Welcome to Prague-Apartments.biz, we
are a family owned business renting out apartments for short and long
stays in the centre of Prague." to "Welcome to Prague-Apartments.com
and Prague-Apartments.biz, a family-owned business assisting visitors
with all types of apartment rentals and accomodations. We offer short
term and long terms leases in Central Prague's most popular areas."

Basically, you want the keywords, page title/explanation, page text
and alt tages to reflect the same thing without overkill.

I believe if you tweak the web site more, you'll be more successful
with you placement. There's a great site from JimWorld at
http://www.jimworld.com/ that covers all aspects of site promotion.
Also, please see the other topics at
http://www.sevendesignavenue.com/setips13.htm in the left column and
visit Google pank Rank criteria at ://www.google.com/technology/.
Reciprocal links are also good for your web pages and are mentioned
there. Also, the text there states in part "Important, high-quality
sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it
conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if
they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with
sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both
important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the
number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of
the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to
determine if it's a good match for your query."

Should you require any clarification of the links or information I
have provided, please request it and I will be happy to respond.

Hello,
My web site has totally despaired from google and yahoo search engines
about 10 days ago. I have done some changes on my web site
www.prague-apartment.com and I would like to know if I have to
register again with google and yahoo to get back or if I have to send
just changes to yahoo and google. Thanks a lot.

Clarification of Answer by journalist-ga on 24 Apr 2003 11:20 PDT
Excellent changes, Aknalb. As my colleague J_Phillip noted, you are
listed in DMOZ so that is good.

I'd also suggest you tweak the page title. Currently, it's
"<TITLE>Apartment Accommodation in Central Prague</TITLE>" - you might
consider "Apartments and rentals in Central Prague, Czech Republic" or
something similar.

Regarding your page description "Selection of apartments available for
rent in Central Prague. Book your accommodation in Prague now online.
Walking distance from metro and tram stations. Apartments for short
and long stays!" you may consider tightening it a bit to reflect
"Apartments and rentals in Central Prague, Czech Republic, convenient
locations, short term or long term rental" - get "Apartments" as the
first word, location as the second and then brief extras, especially
short term. That keeps the main topic and location first in
everything descriptive in your meta tags.

Also, examine the apartment images on the right side of your page and
adjust those descriptions to reflect your major keywords. Do the same
to the map image at the bottom, if possible.

Also, consider a "Contact" link in the left column of the main page.
That way the customer has an easy contact option before scrolling down
to the very bottom of the page.

Remember, too, text in images is not read by SE spiders so make sure
all your pages have the major keywords in the alt tags. [A side note,
I recently learned that the term "alt tag" is incorrect although it is
the more popular and recognizable term. I learned yesterday that the
correct term is "alt attribute."]

After you have done this, you'll have to wait for the next Google
indexing to discover your new rank. As J_Phillip also noted, you may
have more competition so I would examine the current top returns in
the searches for "Prague rentals" and such to see what keywords and
descriptions they are using.

Also, if you are listed on the web in any other places, place links to
those outside sites on your pages because reciprocal links have weight
in page rank. If you are not listed anywhere else on the web (and I
couldn't locate any linkbacks), begin inquiry to local guest service
companies with an online presence (not lodging competitors but
businesses like tour groups, shops, etc.) and suggest reciprocal
links.

I'm here for futher dialogue so please ask for any clarification when
needed.

Hello again,
my web site www.prague-apartment.com is still not at google search
engine. Do you think that they could banish my web site from google
search engine? How do I find out? I have received an email from
seosos.com with this offer http://www.seosos.com/google.htm Do you
think they could help me or just want my money? :-) Thanks a lot.

Clarification of Answer by journalist-ga on 29 Apr 2003 13:34 PDT
If I received an offer like that regarding Google promises from a
non-Google firm, I would regard it as spam. But that's just me. :)

Regarding your site still not being in the returns, you will have to
wait until after the next Google indexing to check the rank. I'm
trying to discover when the next Google indexing is (I think it's at
least once a month) and I'll let you know if I discover the date.

Also remember that your links are important as I mentioned before.
The page Rank explanation at Google states "PageRank relies on the
uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure
as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google
interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page
B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links
a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes
cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and
help to make other pages "important...Important, high-quality sites
receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it
conducts a search.

If you wanted to invest in something, I think a product like Web
Position Gold would be money better spent. They also offer a free
trial download in the left column at http://www.webposition.com/ -
depending on what the download tells you, you may want to invest in
it. It's $149 and up for different editions. It includes the feature
Page Critic (see sample Page Critic report at
http://www.diversifiedins.com/WebP/Critic/DivGoogle%20Page%20Critic_files/DivGoogle%20Page%20Critic.htm
.

Also, make sure you don't belong to any links farms. These are huge
sites that have links to anything and everything. Most search engines
frown on link farms. If your link appears on irrelevant sites, then
it doesn't usually help your ranking. And, yes, I would query Google
to make sure your absence from the rankings isn't some type of glitch.

Clarification of Answer by journalist-ga on 29 Apr 2003 13:51 PDT
I found a link farm that has your URL. I searched Google for

"prague-apartment.com"

and the results are located at
://www.google.com/search?q=%22prague-apartment.com%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1

Look at the last listing on that page:

| Beard Trimmer | Hedge Trimmer | Echo Trimmers | String Trimmer ...
... Includes descriptions, maps showing locations, and directions to
the accommodations.
Online booking available. http://www.prague-apartment.com/. ...
www.icritias.com/ menu.asp?keywords=Hair%20Trimmers&chnl=0 - 20k -
Cached - Similar pages

I don't think your site has anything to do with trimmers. Plus, the
link does not go to a page where your site is listed. It goes to the
main page of a link farm.

Also, see the second page of returns at
://www.google.com/search?q=%22prague-apartment.com%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N
- there's a listing there that reads:

| ANGELICA LAB COATS | Lab Coat | Labcoat | Lab | Angelica Scrubs ...
... Includes descriptions, maps showing locations, and directions to
the accommodations.
Online booking available. http://www.prague-apartment.com/. More. ...
66c30.windermereproperties.com/ chnl0.asp?keywords=Scrubs - 23k -
Cached - Similar pages

That link goes to a site listing for lab coats and hospital scrubs.
Again, no mention of your site. Classic link farm. You need to
contact that place and have your site removed or request they have a
link to a page where your site is actually listed.

Clarification of Answer by journalist-ga on 29 Apr 2003 13:55 PDT
And yet another from the second page of the results above. Follow the
"Browserwise" link to here
http://www.browserwise.com/search/search.cgi?Terms=locations+directions
- no mention of your site at all. Definitely not browser wise.

When a search engine spider follows that and finds no mention of you,
it may interpret that as a stop and dump place. It then doesn't index
you at all becauseof so many dead ends.

Hello,
It has already been one month since my web site
www.prague-apartmet.com has disappeared from google and yahoo search
engines. Do you think I should register my web site at the search
engines or still wait? Thank you.

Clarification of Answer by journalist-ga on 20 May 2003 10:21 PDT
Have you contacted the link farms to remove your listing and have you
tweaked all your pages for keyword relevance? You should do these
things before resubmitting.

Also, I'd like to clarify Web Position Gold demo. If you use it or
the full version, only use it to glean statistics, not to auto-submit
your URL. Other Researchers have recommended it for statistics only
and as Google recommends not using it.

Hello,
I have contacted the link farms and told them to remove my web site.
Can you please see if there are any other link farms that my we page
is in? I also have tweaked all the pages for keyword relevance. I hope
it is ok like this. Can you please tell me if there are any other
things that I should improve on my web site? I don’t use Gold demo
because it is too complicated for me and I don’t understand it. Can I
now resubmit?
I am looking forward to your answer. Best regards. Blanka :-)

I'm checking things now. I'll get back to you as soon when I've

Okay, here we go: you are listed (# 28) at
http://www.mymegasource.com/cgi-bin/smartsearch/smartsearch.cgi?keywords=Apartment
and the meta tags on that page are

<title>MyMegaSource.Com - Search - Shopping and more...</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;">
<META NAME="KeyWords" CONTENT="pay per click search, engine, Web
search, multiple Web search, Metasearch, Meta search, Metasearch
engines, fast, relevant">
<META NAME="description" Content="MyMegaSource.Com gives you the best
search results and keyword bidding.">

The keywords, title, etc, have nothing to do with apartments in Prague
although the list is completely about apartment rentals. This may or
may not affect you - you'd have to find out if Google considered that
site a link farm. To be safe, I'd ask that the listing be removed.

You also appear on a WebBound page as "Apartment Accommodation in
Prague - www.prague-apartment.com" at
http://www.webbound.com/P377/Czech_Republic_Apartments.html
However, the keywords on that page *are* relevant and when I did an
independent search at WebBound for "prague apartments" your site was
among those listed at
http://search.webbound.com/Search.php?words=prague+apartment&o=A&p=0 -
here are their tags:

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="WebBound Magazine, The Essential Web
Resource: Czech Republic: WebBound Magazine, The Essential Web
Resource: Czech Republic Apartments">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Czech Republic Apartments,web
bound,webbound">
<TITLE>Web Bound - Czech Republic: Czech Republic Apartments</TITLE>

Again, you may choose to remove it just to be safe but it looks okay
to me.

I then checked your meta tags again and found:

<TITLE>Apartments and rentals in Central Prague, Czech
Republic</TITLE>
<META name="description" content="Apartments and rentals in Central
Prague, Czech Republic, convenient locations, short term or long term
rental">
<META name="keywords" content="prague, apartment rental, apartments,
short term rental, short term lease, czech republic, accommodation,
prague apartment, for rent, hotel, motel, inn, prague lodging, cheap,
inexpensive, prague hotel, discount, travel, hotel praga, prag, travel
package">

Tweak it a bit to read:

<TITLE>Prague apartments and rentals in central Prague, Czech
Republic</TITLE>
<META name="description" content="Prague apartments and rentals in
Central Prague, Czech Republic, convenient locations, short term or
long term rental">
<META name="keywords" content="prague apartment rental, tourism,
tourists, visiting Prague, short term rental, short term lease, czech
republic, accommodation, prague apartments, for rent, hotel, motel,
inn, prague lodging, cheap, inexpensive, prague hotel, discount,
travel, hotel praga, prag, travel package">

[Note in the META name, I have removed the comma between "prague" and
"apartment rental" to read "prague apartment rental" - your site is
more about Prague apartments that just Prague in general. I also added
the words tourism, tourists and visiting Prague.]

Searching your entire URL at Google, this page appears:

- there are links there to various information.

I do think you may have more competition *however* look at the
following search results where I combined a few of your keywords with
"prague apartment":

central prague apartment
Your site is #1
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=central+prague+apartment+

Podskalska apartment
Your site is #2
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Podskalska+apartment+

Slezska apartment
Your site is #1
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Slezska+apartment

Borivojova apartment
Your site is #3
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Borivojova+apartment

So, it seems you are well-indexed by Google and, in more keyword
specific searches, you are coming up in the first or second slot. The
general term "prague apartment" is no doubt more prevalent on the web
than it used to be so you may have lost some rank due to more sites
with that key phrase. However, remember that securing reciprocal
links from sites that have to do with Prague tourism *will* help your
link pop and your rank. Not link farms but relevant tourism sites.
For instance the local Chamber of Commerce, local business sites - if
you know a restaurant or business that has a web site and they will
add you as a local link because your rental occupants frequent that
restaurant, then that would be a good thing as long as the main site
is relevant to tourism.

See the results for "Prague tourism" at
://www.google.com/search?q=prague+tourism&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
to see if there are legitimate ones that could feature a link to your
site. Link pop from those types of sites would be good for exposure.
As they list you, you need to also list them on your site in a links
page in the right or left column of each page.

After you've removed the last of the link farms, you may just want to
sit tight before you resubmit because the specific keywords searches
*do* show you in top slots.

Hello Aknalb,

In general, what could cause the drop in ranking is either that you
simply have gotten more online competition, or your own site changed
in suboptimal ways, or that Google altered some of their ranking
algorithms.

Specifically for you, unfortunately there's a PageRank of only 2, some
of your competitors score higher.

Also note that if you want to target "prague apartments" you need to
include that in some titles as well (right now you have "apartment",
but some people might look for the plural "apartments", so you might
think of varying that).

Don't worry too much about your meta-keywords, as long as the list is
not too long. You already list your site in Dmoz.org, which is very
good.

As mentioned, don't leave the "img" element's "alt"-attribute empty,
as it is important for the search engines (as well as certain
browsers/ visitors).

I wish you best of luck! Don't worry too much if your site temporarily
drops down in ranking, but rather continue to concentrate on
delivering the best & freshest content, and to not get into any
spamming schemes (like Link Farms, or SEO software). In the meantime,
until the ranking is better again, what you might want to do is
advertise on Google for your specific keywords.
