Question ID: 193396
heres the scenario. i want several computers to be able to acces the
internet through another computer that is connected to my dsl. that
computer (win xp pro now, but can change to win2k server) already
hooked up to the dsl is through a wireless router. the other computers
(win xp pro) connecting to the computer providing access are over
normal cat5 cables. how do i perform this using windows xp pro,
linksys hardware, and windows 2000 server (if needed)?

Do the computers have to directly connect throught the computer to
obtain internet access, or would a solution which allows them to both
access the server and the DSL connection acceptable? If it is not,
the first thing you will need to do is load Windows 2000 Server, and I
will provide instructions on how to configure it to perform this task
(if such a solution is acceptable, you do not need to load Windows XP
server). Also, what type of Linksys hardware do you have? WAPs
(Wireless Access Points), Routers, Hubs, or something else?

I use a third party software as a means sharing my internet
connection. Is this something you'd be interested in? It's quite
simple actually.

the computers that need access need to connect directly through
another computer setup on a wireless network which is using a router.
i will need step by step instructions.

i have just a hub in addition to the wireless router.

Will you need instructions for loading Windows 2000 Server also?
Otherwise I will simply provide instructions for setting up Windows
2000 Server to act as a DHCP client on the network, and sharing the
internet connection through that. I would also assume that the
computer has more than one Ethernet (NIC) card, as you will need two -
one as an uplink for the router, and the other for the incomming DSL
line.

I should be set on loading windows 2000 server, but please include any
services, components, or other add ins I will need to get this to
work.

Yes, I do have 2 nic cards on the machine recieving the dsl and
connecting the other computers.

The XP Pro or Windows 2000 computer just needs a connection to the DSL
via one network adapter or other means, and the other NIC needs to
connect to a hub that is also connected to the other computers.

On the Windows 2000 or XP machine that is connected to the DSL, you
only need to enable Internet Connection Sharing. You may find
everything that you need to know for XP at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/networking/ics.asp

and you can find your solution for Windows 2000 at:
http://www.certificationsuccess.com/index.cfm?pageid=229

The underlying technology is called NAT or Network Address
Translation. I have configured NAT using routers, UNIX-like OS based
compters, Windows, etc. It's really a piece of cake once you have
done it at least once. Good luck!

Connect your router to your dsl connection and the cable going to your
computer connect it to a hub. Then you can connect all the other pc's
to the hub. Just get a hub with enough ports to support some growth
too. Or go buy a new router that has a built in hub. You can pick up
4 port hub cheap. Just make sure it is a 10/100 and not a 10 base T
hub.
Good Luck.
