It is indeed feasible, by car or bus, to travel to Los Mochis. Here's
some travel information to get there:
Mexico's Copper Canyon
http://www.mexicoscoppercanyon.com/howtogethere.htm
"The journey from Mazatlan to Los Mochis is 275 miles along the MX15
which follows the western coast, but unfortunately the road is too far
inland to see any of the coastline"
... according to a personal homepage:

From: Copper Canyon Mexico
http://www.coppercanyon-mexico.com/cc-mex/cctren.htm
"There are two trains daily in each direction: Primera Especial
and Segunda Clase. Primera Clase is first class. Most first class
trains will have a restaurant and bar car, comfortable seats and
security. Segunda Clase is second class, and about half the price
of first class. It is only recommended as a last resort, as the
cars will be crowded and not well-tended, without a restaurant
car, and is much slower, thus you may not see the sights of the
Canyons. The train trip takes about 13 hours one way, 15-16 hours
for second class."
There are a variety of sites specifically about visiting the
Copper Canyon.

"The First Class Express train makes 7 stops before its final
destination. You can elect to stay at any of the places the train
stops at, and spend a night or two and explore the local area; or
perhaps take a horseback ride into the canyons for a closer look.
You may just take the train ride for the view and experience as
part of your trip to Mexico, or you could spend a week in the
region, using the train line as your main route through the
canyons, stopping overnight to explore and discover the local
areas. Whatever way you choose to experience Copper Canyon, the
most important piece of advice is to book in advance. This is not
a place you can just go to and expect to find a hotel room and a
train ticket, especially during the busy times."
You've got all sorts of hotel options, which are completely budget
dependent. Here's a site that reviews a range of $25-$155/night
hotels:

Here's an 8-day tour for $995 at:
Caravan Tours

A tour may be the way to go in order to get an educated,
structured trip.
Here is one site's take on it, which may or may not be true or
applicable:
Copper Canyon Mexican Train Tours
http://www.copper-canyon-tour.com/
# 1 Even though the Copper Canyon train ride is one of the most
beautiful in the world you CAN'T see the Canyon from the train.
"You need time in the Copper Canyon itself to see it"
# 2 Count the number of days you get in the Canyon itself from
tour companies.
# 3 Cities that "ARE NOT" in the Copper Canyon "Creel , El
Fuerte to name a few and are of little interest to Copper Canyon
travelers . Places like these are called soak up days because it
is much less expensive to house clients in places like this
instead of the Copper Canyon itself.
# 4 Be sure and get pictures of the lodges you will be staying
at "INSIDE and OUT".
# 5 Make sure that all transfers , meals , train tickets and
lodging are included in price. If not this can really ad up in a
hurry in the canyon because it is so remote.
