Hello Paula,

I had a detailed look at your website malebasics.com. I noted some
important points which could be the reason why the website is not
being displayed in the search listings, particularly that of Goolge
and Froogle.

Before posting an answer I would like to emphazise one point: there is
no short cut to getting listing or get top listing in search engines.
As a matter of fact Search Engine Optimization is a specialized field
nowadays. However, you need not worry about that. You have to follow
some basic rules to acheive your objective. I guess that you are not a
techie and like to get the work done without delving into technical
issues. However I would suggest that you contact your webmaster or the
person who made the website for you and suggest them certain points.

The main issue as I see it is that your site needs to be first
"listed" in Google/Froogle and then you can possible look to
"optimize" it to gain higher rankings. For this you need to understand
the way Google includes your site.

Including your website in Google not all. You also need to tweak your
website a bit to get included and land search visitors on relevant
visitors (for example on your UNICO underwear pages).

Another issue with your website is that it is not linked to from any
other site (at least as Google knows). This issue can be handled later
first; the you should look at INCLUSION and then we can look at
optimization.

Let me admit, I personally have had tough time doing optimizations for
a portal that I worked on, but if you folow the basics the results
will follow.

IMPORTANT: If you are a small business, then I would suggest out of my
personal experience not to go for paid inclusion services like
Overture, GOTO, Real Keywords etc. You can achieve MUCH better results
with getting properly listed in a good search engine like Google.

Kindly let me know if your requirements fall in line with what I have
mentioned above, and your problems are what I have mentioned above, so
that I can answer in detail about the strategies you should
incorporate to achieve your objective.

How long ago did you submit your site to Google? (as precise as you
can remember). Did you use the form at http://google.com/addurl.html ?

Greetings, mununico!

First of all, there is good news: the Googlebot has already visited
your site, even it hasn't actually indexed it:
://www.google.com/search?q=%22%2Bwww.malebasics.%2Bcom%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&filter=0

Now, let's run your site through the Search Engine Spider Simulator at
Search Engine World to get an idea of what Search Engine Spiders will
see when they crawl your site:
<http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/sim_spider.cgi>

-------------------------------------------------------
Spider title          MaleBasics.com

Spider meta desc No description available.

Spider meta keywords  <blank>

Spider Text
MaleBasics.com -The Unique Source of Underwear- --> --> Advanced

Conditions | Home | Company | Contact Us | Order Tracking | Product

-------------------------------------------------------

Google and some other Search Engines now ignore meta tags because
webmasters were "stacking" them with hundreds of unrelated terms;
however, you will want to do a good job with your meta tags because
many Search Engines still look at them.

I recommend adding something like the following keywords tag:
<meta name="keywords" content="underwear, under wear, male, boxer,
boxers, brief, briefs, shorts, suspensory, thong, pouch, tshirt,
tshirts, t-shirt, t-shirts, sleeveless, sleep wear, sleepwear,
comfort, comfortable, beach, collection, UNICO">

You will want to add a meta description tag, something like:
<meta name="description" content="MaleBasics.com -- UNICO Boxers,
T-Shirts, Swim Trunks, and Sleepwear">

Now, for Google and other Search Engines that no longer look at <meta>
tags, you will probably want to re-work and expand the text on your
main page so that it includes all of the keywords from your <meta>
keywords tag. I recommend that instead of 3 pair of boxers, you put
on your main page a good paragraph or two describing the company's
products, as well as perhaps a clickable image of each type, labeled
Underwear   Beach Collection   T-Shirts   Sleepwear

Make sure that the words "UNICO", "boxer", "boxers", "underwear",
"t-shirt", "t-shirts", and "sleepwear" appear at least 2 or 3 times in
your main page text (including the text labels for your clickable
images, which the Googlebot will see as part of your text) -- but not
20 times or more: the Googlebot will consider that to be an attempt to
skew Search Engine results as well.

In addition, because Google and other Search Engines think that the
Title is an important piece of information about a page, I would
recommend changing your Title to:
<title>MaleBasics.com -- UNICO Boxers, T-Shirts, Swim Trunks, and
Sleepwear</title>

I would also encourage you to consider adding a "Site Map" page, with
a clickable hyperlink on each page. The "Search" option may not be
terribly helpful unless the customer happens to pick the right search
words.

**********
Something else for you to seriously consider: In order to actually
complete a purchase, after clicking "Buy", your shopping cart software
will not let me progress to the next page without turning off my
advertising / cookie / spyware filtering software.

To be honest, when I buy things online, if a site requires me to
accept a cookie or turn off my blocking/filtering software, I will
leave and NEVER come back. I cannot emphasize enough to you what a
turnoff it is to a potential customer that your site requires them to
do this to make a purchase; I figure that any site that does so is
intent on spying on me and collecting information without my
permission, and I don't particularly care to do business with those
kinds of sites.
**********

Once you've got the changes to your website ready to go, you will want
to submit it to Google at:
<://www.google.com/addurl.html>
  (Be aware that it may take anywhere from 1 to 3 months for your site
to start showing up on Google; however, since Google also uses DMOZ as
a guide to its indexing efforts, you might be able to speed that up a
little by also submitting your site in a DMOZ category as described
next.)

  DMOZ (Directory Mozilla/Open Directory Project):
<http://www.dmoz.org/add.html>
    FIRST: search using keywords that really describe your new
    website to find the best category at <http://www.dmoz.org> ,
    then once you're on the page for the category you choose,
    click on the blue "Add URL" hypertext link in the
    upper right-hand corner of the page.
    For you, I recommend
Shopping: Clothing: Men's: Underwear
http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=Shopping/Clothing/Men%27s/Underwear

Other popular Search Engines to which you can submit your new site:

  HotBot:
<http://ldbreg.lycos.com/cgi-bin/mayaLogin?m_PR=29&m_CBURL=http://insite.lycos.com/searchservices/lite?step1.asp>

  AllTheWeb:
<http://www.alltheweb.com/add_url.php>

  AltaVista:
<http://addurl.altavista.com/addurl/new>

  Zeal (LookSmart/MSN free submission w/free registration)
<http://www.zeal.com/users/register.jhtml>

To get a higher Google Page Rank, you should ask sites with similar or
related themes (such as men's clothing, men's underwear, and women's
underwear) if they would place a link to your website on theirs in
exchange for you placing a link to their website on yours. You will
especially want to find other sites which already have a Page Rank of
4 or higher; you can determine a site's Page Rank using the Google
Toolbar, which is an add-in to Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can
read more about the Toolbar, and download it, here:
<http://toolbar.google.com>

For more information on how Google Page Ranking works, I encourage you
to read the following excellent papers:
"The Google Pagerank Algorithm and How It Works" by Ian Rogers, IPR

"PageRank Uncovered" by Chris Ridings

Remember that links from a few ***quality*** sites with related themes
who link to only a few other pages (including yours) will do far more
to improve your Page Rank than links from one hundred other pages that
link to hundreds of sites.

CAUTION: Be wary of "submit-a-site", website "positioning", and
"search engine optimizer" services, and "link exchanges" (link farms),
who promise to increase your Page Rank in exchange for money (or for
free, for that matter). Such programs (like WebPosition Gold and
LinksToYou) are a good way to get your site banned from Search
Engines.
