My Powerbook G3 (not Firewire, but not the earliest models) is having
trouble, I think because my system is corrupted. I have lost, however,
my system CDs. Where can I purchase replacements to reinstall my
system (I don't want to upgrade to 9.0.)

I'd rather not use eBay (paypal hates me, and I hate checks); I'd like
a link to somewhere where I can purchase the replacement disks --
including anything that might be Powerbook G3 specific.

Thanks!

Hello.

A store called Milagro Computers lists a Mac OS 8.6 CD for $59.
"Mac OS 8.6 CD-RM 59.00"
source: MacCart.com
http://www.maccart.com/macspecials.htm

A number of other dealers have Mac OS 8.5 discs with OS 8.6 updates:

See: Hardcore Mac

We Love Macs
http://store.yahoo.com/lovemacs/macos8-6.html
If you get a copy of 8.5, you can use a free 8.6 update available from
Apple:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.6_Update/

Now, I know that you mentioned that you'd rather not use eBay, but I
really feel that I should at least let you know that there's an
original OS 8.6 CD from a PowerBook G3 currently for sale there. This
is, of course, the EXACT replacement CD for your computer.
As of this writing, the price is $9.99, and no bids have been made.
From eBay:
"an original, bootable Apple Macintosh System 8.6 CD. It came from a
PowerBook G3 system and is like new."
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3020614220&category=11231

Finally, I should mention that it may be worth a try to give Apple a
call. A few years ago, I ran into a similar situation and needed
start-up CDs for an older, discontinued Mac. I called Apple's Customer
Service number and explained the problem. They very graciously sent me
replacement discs at no charge. Again, though, that was a few years
ago, and Apple's policies may have changed. It might be worth a shot,
though. Apple's Customer Service number is:
1-800-767-2775

search strategy:
mac os 8.6 cd
ebay: mac 8.6

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Excellent response, and thanks for the info about apple's customer service.

Great job.

Apple no longer provides 8.5 or 8.6 CDs, as they wish to encourage
everyone to move to OS 9. Even if a support agent wanted to provide
such a CD, there are none available to them.
