About 10 years ago I received several MAGNALITE PROFESSIONAL pots,
charcoal in color, as a gift. One of the pots has EITHER accumulated
mineral deposits OR suffered erosion of a surface coating, resulting
in a silvery white area on the inside bottom. What is this and what
should I do about it? (Replace it? Return it? Treat it? Other?)

I do not have a definitive answer, but I might have enough information
to help you decide what to do. I have found three discussions that
talk about, in part, silver and white on the inside bottom of cookware
(mainly Calphalon, but also Magnalite, which seems to be discussed in
similar terms), as well as one experience with customer service
concerning old Magnalite cookware that had lost its finish.

Would this be sufficient to post as an answer?

My objective is to know definitively whether the affected area
resulted from addition or subtraction, and if subtraction, whether the
pot is safe to use, and if not, what remedy I may have.

There is no answer at this time.

In my experience, this has occurred when leaving tomato based products
in the pot overnight and /or washing in a dishwasher. This erodes the
finish and exposes the aluminum core. From all I have read, the pot is
no longer safe for cooking and should be disposed of. There is no
warrany if this has happened.

I have thrown away almost an entire set.
