Question ID: 194836
I have Windows Media Player (MP) version 9.00.00.2980 (the very latest
build) and am operating under Win XP Pro (SP1). My computer is a 1GHZ
Pentium III with 512KB of memory. Every once in a while MP locks up.
It's sporadic and seems to bear no relationship to the type of video
file being played. Though I am then able to exit MP, I cannot
thereafter bring up the program without rebooting. When I initiate the
reboot, I'm presented with a small window labeled "Media Event Sink
Window." I click on Exit in that window and the rebooting proceeds
normally. What is the meaning of "sink window," and does the phrase
contain any clues as to the reason(s) for the crash/lockup? A search
of Microsoft's knowledge base results in no hits on that term, nor
have I been able to find any similar trouble reports in the Windows
community newsgroups.

I hasten to add that, although I did indeed find many complaints in
the MS community newsgroups about the instability of MP9, none of them
mentioned the presence of the "Media Event Sink Window."

Hello nautico,

I found references to this error in Korean, which did us little good,
and a bit on the Usenet boards using Google groups. For example, one
commenter had a very good thought that may well be your problem:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=007701c2e924%247624c190%242f01280a%40phx.gbl&rnum=9&prev=/groups%3Fnum%3D50%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DISO-8859-1%26q%3Dmedia%2Bevent%2B%252B%2522sink%2Bwindow%2522%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

"You're running the debug version of DirectX, so you see all sorts of
weird things normal end users wouldn't see. Switch to use the retail
version and you'll be good to go."
  http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#dxdebug

This could be the problem.

In another thread:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=Xns932B76BD37EE1st13836%4024.25.0.82&rnum=11&prev=/groups%3Fnum%3D50%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DISO-8859-1%26q%3Dmedia%2Bevent%2B%252B%2522sink%2Bwindow%2522%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

"...Oh, and forget trying to kill the process. Shutdown/restart is
the only way to get it out of there. Even then, it hangs on "Media
Event Sink Window" not responding and a three-finger salute is
required.

This is WMP v9.00.00.2980 on Win98, with every update I know to
install on it.

Does anyone know what's wrong with this software ?..."

In this case, it could be because of his OS being in the Win 98 family
which is not your problem.

Since this is all I could find, I'm hesistant to post as an official
answer. But the DirectX seems like a likely culprit. If this works for
you, please let me know.

Many thanks. You did good! Though I forgot to check if I already had
the latest version of DirectX, I went ahead and installed version 9.0
from Microsoft's site and retested Win Media Player, trying to
recreate the scenario in which it had previously locked up and
resulted in that cryptic Media Event Sink Window. The test was
successful. Although MP locked up again, at least this time I was able
to bring it up again and start over without having to reboot. Sooooo,
go ahead and make your answer official, and we'll close this case.

Hello nautico,

Thank you for your reply to my clarification. I'm please this turned
out to be the source of your problem as there was little to go on in
my search for your particular error.

As I noted above:

""You're running the debug version of DirectX, so you see all sorts of
weird things normal end users wouldn't see. Switch to use the retail
version and you'll be good to go."

Search Strategy:

media +sink +window on Google Groups
