Question ID: 194850
I'm looking for a healing retreat within 4 hours of Los Angeles, that
caters to people suffering from chronic illness (fibromyalgia in my
case) AND the emotional issues that accompany such illnesses. Ideal
duration of the retreat would be 4-5 days, although other durations
would be considered. I'm seeking a caring and nurturing environment
(a peaceful locale is a plus) in which to work with qualified
professionals who are experienced in dealing with these issues. I'm
familiar with the Esalan Institute already and this is not what I'm
looking for, as they offer many different workshops...whereas I'm
looking for a dedicated program. I'm also not interested in anything
that is TOO "new age"....although a spiritual/metaphysical inclination
is most welcome.

Hello nerv:

Thanks for the interesting question. I believe that I can help you,
but I need some further information first.

* When you say "within 4 hours of Los Angeles", is that 4 hours by car
or 4 hours by plane?

Thanks.

Hello nerv-ga,

I see by your prior questions that you are looking for a variety of
resources to help you with your fibromyalgia. This research project
for finding healing retreats was very interesting and inspiring. I’ve
located a variety of retreats that could meet your needs. Before going
to the specific retreats, I want to explain my rationale for what I’ve
collected.

Doing the research to identify retreat centers led me to an incredible
wealth of resources on the subject of how retreats offer benefits for
your body, mind, and spirit. The retreat center programs offer various
combinations of nurturing attention to address your physical, mental
and spiritual needs. My research shows that there are only a few
organizations that deal specifically with people who have chronic
illnesses. Of these, Harmony Hill of Union, Washington sounds
especially appealing. Their programs seem to be very much in tune with
your needs. You might want to call them to see if they can suggest
someone in your area that is in tune with their approach. Of the
Southern California programs the Ojai Foundation looks very good. They
will work with you to develop a customized individual guided retreat.

I don’t know what is your preference for medical care, body work and
physical fitness, psychological help and spiritual comfort, but in my
search I discovered a very wide spectrum of resources that might meet
your needs. I tried to group them according to their chief focus but
there are no cut-and-dried categories as they all seem to offer
overlapping services. I’ve included some retreat centers that are spas
for rejuvenating the body. I’ve also included retreat centers that are
strictly spiritually focused. The research I uncovered confirms that
giving yourself the opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day
cares of the world at any type of retreat will have holistic benefits
for your body, mind, and spirit.

In addition to specific retreats, I’ve also included the various
searchable retreat directories I found to help you explore further. I
hope that this research will serve your needs. Please ask for
clarification if any of this material isn’t as clear as it should be.

I wish you well for finding a beautiful and nurturing retreat close to
home.

Hi czh-ga,

Thank you so much for the extensive list of healing resources. I
appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I've looked through
the list and unfortunately do not see anything that quite hits the
mark. In doing some more research of my own, I can say that I'm
looking for something such as the "Mindfullness Based Stress
Reduction" workshops given by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Any ideas on how to
find something like this in my area?

Clarification of Answer by czh-ga on 25 Apr 2003 18:50 PDT
Hello again nerv-ga,

I’m glad that you were able to more clearly define what you’re looking
for. The MBSR program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn is well-known and
widely implemented. I was able to find you quite a few locations where
it’s offered in Southern California. In addition, many of the retreat
centers I listed also offer mindfulness meditation workshops and
retreats. I think you should be able to find something that will meet
your requirements. Wishing you health and peace.
