Microsoft Outlook Question - I am trying to set up a separate e-mail account on my computer to receive e-mail from a different e-mail account. I would like to have an entirely different in-box for that account. I went ahead and created a new user (Windows XP) and logged in as that user and opened Outlook. Unfortunately my inbox from my current account then comes up, instead of an empty inbox. I can create the mail account, and retrieve the mail from the new account, but it goes into a common inbox that I share with my other e-mail account and anything added or deleted from it gets added or deleted from my current e-mail in box. Can you tell me how to set up 2 user accounts on the same computer so that I can access the other e-mail and pull it into a totally separate in & out box? THANK YOU!!!!! |

Good Evening fogcity-ga, As we talked about earlier in our comments, I am officially closing this question. You noted that our discussion had answered your question. I hope the installation went well. If you decide that you would like the step-by-step directions to set up rules in Outlook, please ask for clarification. Thank you. thinkout-ga |

1. Outlook or Outlook Express? 2. Are you connecting to your email through an ISP (POP/SMTP) or through your corporate MS Exchange Server (MAPI) |

Greetings! fogcity-ga The way that I solved this problem was to add the second account as you did and then add a new folder. I gave the new foder a name like "Account 2 Inbox". Once this was done, I added a rule to the software so that any email comming in to the inbox to the email address of my second account would get forwarded directly into the "second inbox". So when you click on the "send and receive" button, all of the mail that is addressed to your second account will end up in the "Account 2 Inbox" and your first account emails will end up in the "Inbox" folder. I hope this helps. If it is what you are looking for, please let me know and I will post step-by-step instructions and officially answer your question. Thanks and have a good day! thinkout-ga |

Hi fogcity-ga, I think I can answer your question, but I want to make sure that the solution I am recommending is acceptable. As stated in my earlier note, I can send you instructions telling you how to set up rules in outlook to that email will get put in seperate folders as it comes in. I can also show you how to send email from either of your email addresses. This involves adding new inbox folders and setting up rules in outlook to route the email messages accordingly. If this is what you are looking for, let me know and I will gladly post the step-by-step instructions and officially answer your question. Thanks, thinkout-ga |

Unfortunately I don't think that is going to fix the problem. I also need to have a separate way of tracking all e-mails that are sent out from that account, so they don't get mixed with the original account. Is there no way to have a completely separate, empty in-box and out-box? Is the only way to solve this problem to use a completely separate and different e-mail retrieval system (i.e. outlook express or another program?). |

Hi again fogcity-ga, Using the method I am describing you can have two seperate email accounts. When you get mail from account 1, it will go into your normal inbox. When you get mail from account 2, it will go into your second inbox (that you create) When you send email from account 1, a copy of it will be saved in your sent items folder. When you send email from account 2, a copy of it will be saved in your second sent items folder (another folder you create). I think this is what you are hoping to accomplish. There are a bunch of steps involved in ading the rules. I don't think you need to use a seperate email program for each account, although this would also work. Thanks, thinkout-ga |

Hi & thanks so much for working with me on this. I'm sure I could set it up if you walk me through it, and it would accomplish what I'm trying to do, and I would understand it. I'm just wondering if that's the cleanest and simplest way, or if I should just use an entirely different e-mail retrieval program. I'm setting this up on my employee's home computer so they can retrieve work e-mail to an entirely different place, and I don't want it to get mixed in with their personal e-mail information. She's not entirely computer savvy so I don't want to make it complicated, it has to be clean and simple to understand (i.e. click here for your personal e-mail, click there for your work e-mail). I think they are already using either Outlook or Outlook Express. What other e-mail retrieval programs might you recommend that we could use instead and I could set it up entirely separate for her? Thanks! |

Hi fogcity-ga, As far as being simple, the method that I am talking about is slightly complicated to set up, but very simple to use. One folder would hold all the emails from one account and the other folder would have them from the other account. There are two minor drawbacks with this approach: 1. The employee may accidentally send email from the incorrect account if they are not careful, because when they send email out, they need to pick which account they are using. 2. When you have created your new "sent" folders, (you would need to create one for each account) you will still have your old sent folder. In your original sent folder (the one that is default in your system) you will have a copy of all emails sent out from all accounts. In your two new sent folders, you will have a copy of each mail message that was sent out from a certain account. So if you send a message out from the business account, a copy of it will be put into the "sent" folder and also in the "business sent" (the one you made) folder. Again, these are minor issues and once it is all set up, it should be pretty obvious that all the email in the "business sent" folder is business related and the stuff in the "home sent" is personal. The most fool-proof way to handle this problem if your end-user is not very computer-handy would probably be to just get a totally different email program installed on their computer. Then you can just have an icon on their desktop for "Home Email" and "Work Email". Hope this helps and if you want to try and set up both accounts on outlook, let me know. I would have to research outlook express to see if it could be done there as well. I am not certain. Some of your original comments said you were using outlook and not outlook express. Let me know if I can help any more, thinkout-ga |

Greetings again fogcity-ga, Additionally, if you are looking for different email programs to install, there are many. I mainly use Outlook. Some others are below: Eudora http://www.eudora.com/ Pegasus http://www.pmail.com/ Hope this helps. thinkout-ga |

Hi & thanks for the info. I think just even switching mail accounts is going to be too complicated for them, unfortunately. It's too bad Outlook won't let you run too clean copies of it's software at the same time with totally separate inboxes. In any case, I guess we'll got to plan b and set up the separate e-mail program. One more question, if they are using either Outlook, can I just install Outlook Express as the other e-mail program and vice versa? Thanks! |

Hi fogcity-ga, I am glad you have found my information useful. To answer your question, yes. You can install both Outlook and Outlook Express on the same machine. Just make sure that each program is pointing at a different mail file. I am not sure what the default mail file locations are, and in the newer versions it may not be an issue. Once quite a while back, I somehow got both outlook and outlook express both pointing at the same mail file (I could see my old messages in both programs). I don't think this will be a problem for you though. I am only mentioning it as something you should look for when you are testing the setup. Please let me know if I can help you further and have a great weekend! Also, if you feel that I have answered your question to your satisfaction, please let me know so that I may officially close it. Thanks again! thinkgout-ga |
