Question ID: 195022
When I sync my Kyocera Palm OS phone via USB on my desktop I use
PocketMirror Pro. It works great! It syncs my contacts, calendar,
tasks, and notes.

I want a solution that will let me sync on the road. Something that
uses the phone’s build-in dial-up (the thing the built-in web browser
uses).

I need something that doesn’t require special software installed onto
our exchange server. Something that just acts like PocketMirror.

The 2 programs I have found so far are:

There is a new program from DataViz called Beyond Contacts. I don’t
know if that can sync wirelessly.

I found a program that will do it, but it is made for enterprises or
carriers. It is called Mobile Groupware client (www.novosoft-usa.com…
I think), but when I emailed them about would it worked for me they
said:
“Unfortunately this
> is a server-based
> software to be installed on GSM provider side and then the GSM
provider
> should sell these services.
> 1 user copy cannot be sold.

Hi sherpaj,

Would you be willing to have software installed onto your desktop PC?
I have found a couple of products that let you sync over an Internet
connection (so you could use your phone's modem), but they require
software to be installed on both the handheld device and the desktop
PC.

One of the products lets you sync Outlook e-mail, calendar events, and
contact information. It costs approximately $70 per year.

The other product also lets you sync Outlook e-mail, calendar events,
and contact information. It is currently in beta testing and can be
downloaded for free. But you will probably have to pay for it once it
comes out of beta testing.

There may be other products, but their web sites are currently down.
I will try to access their web sites later.

I will also contact DataViz to see if their Beyond Contacts product
lets you sync over an Internet connection.

sldreamer

Yes, I would be willing to have software installed onto my desktop PC?
It is behind a NAT router/firewall, but I can do simple port
forwarding if need be.

What operating system does your desktop PC run?

XP. Just to clarify, I can put software on my desktop PC, but not
on the exchange server.

Hi sherpaj,

The following products let you sync email and PIM data between your
Kyocera 7135 smartphone and desktop PC over a modem. All of these
products require software to be installed on the smartphone and PC.

======================================================================
PeerSwitch
----------

An overview of this product is available on the following pages:

http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/mobility.asp
http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/mobility2.asp
http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/mobility3.asp
http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/mobility4.asp
http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/mobility5.asp

More detailed information can be found on the product's FAQ page:

PeerSwitch FAQs
http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/faqs_general.asp

Here are some of the questions on that page:

"How does PeerSwitch work?
PeerSwitch utilizes a unique hybrid peer-to-peer architecture.
Security, authentication, and connection services are managed
centrally, while data is distributed, allowing you to maintain a
single copy of your data within the confines of your existing security
system. When you want to reach your data, two outbound connections,
one from the requesting device and the second from the serving PC, are
initiated and bridged by the PeerSwitch server. Once the connection is
made, the encrypted data flows between the devices without
intervention from the central server to provide speed and security."

"Do I have to sync PeerSwitch information with my PDA?
No synchronization of information is required. Your Outlook and file
information is always up-to-date not matter which device you use to
access it. You are looking at the information on the computer from
which it is shared. When you modify your own Outlook information, it
is modified directly on the computer on which the information
resides."

"When I use PeerSwitch to remotely send email, from which computer is
the email sent?
To send an email, you select a particular Outlook folder that you have
shared. The folder doesn’t necessarily have to be an email folder.
When you reply to or forward an email, or compose a new one, it is
sent via the computer from which the Outlook folder you selected was
shared. So, it is easy to create an email using your home computer,
PDA, or web phone, but send it out via your office computer."

One of the questions (question 10 under the General Information
section) describes the access that is allowed on PIM data using
various handheld devices. It displays the following chart:

PeerSwitch Outlook Outlook Outlook Outlook Outlook Files
Interface Calendar Contacts Email Notes Tasks

                                  View
             View View Reply
PDA web Add Add Forward View View View
Modify Modify Send Delete Delete Save
            Delete Delete New
                                 Delete

                                  View
                        View Reply
Phone web View Call Forward - - -
                       Email Send
                                  New
                                 Delete

As you can see, a PDA can synchronize all types of PIM data, while a
phone can only synchronize email and view certain types of PIM data.
I contacted the PeerSwitch customer service department and asked them
if the Kyocera 7135 smartphone could be considered a PDA. The
representative with whom I spoke was not familiar with that particular
device, but he said that since it runs on the Palm OS, it probably
could synchronize everything. They do offer a free 30-day trial so
that you can evaluate the product.

The PC and handheld requirements are listed on the following page:

PeerSwitch System Requirements
http://www.gigamediaaccess.com/system_requirements.asp

You can enroll for the PeerSwitch service on the following page:

PeerSwitch: Enroll Now
https://www.peerswitch.net/world/members/ps_enroll.asp

When you enroll, you will be given a free 30-day trial. At the end of
the trial, you will have to pay $9.99 per month (or $99.99 for one
year) to continue to use the service.

"ThinAir Server with Groupware Access allows you to leverage the power
of your groupware system - email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes
- from wherever your work requires. And with public and private folder
support, ThinAir Server with Groupware Access allows you to work with
information that other solutions just can't reach. Access the
Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino groupware features your business'
success depends upon:

Mail - work with messages from (and move messages between) any of your
mail folders; scan email headers; read, reply, compose, forward and
delete messages (with attachments).
Calendar - Create, accept, and view appointments on the fly. View
changes to your schedule even if they have changed while you are on
the move.
Contacts - Look up contacts in your server-side address book while you
are on the road. A single tap can start an email, even to a person
whose address you've forgotten. Or, if you're using a mobile phone, a
single button initiates a call to a contact in your groupware address
book. No more synching or re-entering your contacts for each new
device you get.
Tasks - Access your to-do or task list whenever you need it.
Notes - Keep up with your corporate bulletin board postings even while
you are away."

Additional information, including PC and handheld requirements, can be
found on the product's FAQ page:

ThinAir Groupware Access - FAQ
http://www.thinairapps.com/products/tas_faq.php

Here are a couple of the questions on that page:

"What types of information can I interact with using ThinAir Server
with Groupware Access?
Leveraging the power of the ThinAir Server wireless platform,
Groupware Access provides for full-featured interaction with your
groupware system, enabling access to mail, calendar, contact
information, notes, and to-do functions in any public and private
folder."

"Does Groupware Access synchronize my email and other information?
Groupware Access provides for the ability to see your email, calendar,
contacts, tasks, and notes as they are stored on your corporate
server, just as if you were using your PC at your desk. Anything you
do on your device immediately takes effect on the server, so you don't
have to synchronize later, or re-do any work you've done on the device
once you get back to your PC."

Mail Anywhere Studio
--------------------

Information about this product is available on the following page:

Mail Anywhere Studio
http://www.sybase.com/products/mobilewireless/ianywheremobilemail

The following description is provided by that page:

"Mail Anywhere Studio, a key component of iAnywhere Solutions'
m-Business platform, is an out of the box solution for enabling
'always-available' access to enterprise e-mail, calendar, contact and
task information from mobile and wireless devices. It securely extends
e-mail and professional productivity information from enterprise
e-mail systems including Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange to a
variety of mobile and wireless devices including Palm, Windows CE,
Pocket PC, and EPOC.

Mail Anywhere makes mobile workers more productive by enabling them to
receive and respond to email immediately, thereby accelerating
communications, decision-making and customer responsiveness within an
organization. With the ability to access and update calendars, address
books and to-do lists, mobile users can easily stay on top of
important meetings, calls and deadlines while away from the office. In
addition, Mail Anywhere Studio provides direct server-based
synchronization, eliminating the need to perform cradle
synchronization with a PC or laptop. This ensures mobile workers can
access their information from wherever they are, whenever they need
it."

Additional information, including PC and handheld requirements, can be
found on the following pages:

Mail Anywhere Studio Datasheet

Mail Anywhere Studio FAQs
http://www.sybase.com/detail/1,6904,1015740,00.html

Here are some of the questions on the FAQ page:

"I already have access to e-mail through my Palm and/or CE device.
How does your solution differ?
Most e-mail and PIM synchronization solutions today require users to
perform a cradle synchronization through their desktop or PC. Mail
Anywhere Studio provides direct, server-based synchronization - no PC
or cradle required. That means users can receive and respond to e-mail
immediately, access and update calendars and address books all while
away from the office."

"Can I connect to my e-mail information real-time?
No. Mail Anywhere Studio provides synchronization and the ability to
work offline so users have 'always available' access to their
information. This helps minimize airtime costs and bandwidth usage,
and ensures that end-users have fast response times. Users can
synchronize as often as required - daily, hourly or more frequently if
needed."

"Can users schedule their synchronization?
Yes. Mail Anywhere Studio’s AutoSync feature enables you to access
your latest e-mail and PIM information without the need to manually
click and synchronize. With AutoSync, any Palm or PocketPC-based
device can automatically invoke synchronization, eliminating much of
your involvement in the process. As it is a scheduled synchronization
session, it feels like automatic delivery of information."

email, calendar, contacts, and tasks. The following page has
information on how you can request the free 30-day evaluation version

the products have evaluation versions available, so you should be able
to find the one that best suits your needs without spending a lot of
money.

Finally, I did ask DataViz about their Beyond Contacts product. They
said that it does not work over a modem.
