I want a schedule of shows for selling oil painting reproductions in
the United States for 2003 and 2004.

Request for Question Clarification by pafalafa-ga on 25 Apr 2003 15:04 PDT
Hello there,

I'd very much like to assist you here. It would help, though, if I
had a bit more guidance as to what you need. There are thousands of
shows that sell oil painting reproductions in one form or another.
For most of these shows, the reproductions are only a sideline in the
context of a more general "arts and crafts" show. A small number of
shows concentrated more exclusively on paintings. Some distributors
specialize in reproductions.

Can you tell me more specifically what you need.

Is your focus on reproductions of "the masters" -- well known
paintings from famous artists?

Do you want to buy such paintings? Exhibit yourself? Market to folks
in the business?

Is there a particular geographic area of interest?

What would you consider as a satisfactory answer -- how many listings
would you consider reasonable number.

Any further information you could provide would be much appreciated.

It's ok for the listings to include other media in the shows (i.e.
arts and crafts/gifts) the shows we are thinking of are large. We sell
reproductions of masters as well as variations on classic fine art
paintings. We are interested in the shows for selling opportunities as
well as marketing. We are located in So. California, however our
geographic interest is nation-wide.

How many listings, well, we would prefer directory listings that
include a broad sweep of the shows (and dates), not websites about
individual shows. We'll investigate the shows ourselves. 20 or 30
shows/year sounds reasonable.

Hello, artshowcenter-ga

I found a number of show sites for you which provide online exhibit
listings as well as more detailed information in their offline
magazines. I get the impression that most of the online listings do
not extend into 2004 this early in the year. However, the magazine
listings may be more extensive and provide some dates for 2004 by now.
In any event, all the sites will give you the ongoing information for
the following year when it is available. I tried to focus only on
those sites which included the types of fairs and shows which would
include the types of paintings you wish to exhibit.

Art & Craftshows.net

"Every year there are thousands of festivals in North America where
artists, artisans, and craftspeople display and sell their work. Shows
range from major national/regional events with 100,000+ visitors to
small local fund-raisers. Sunshine Artist magazine provides our
database of over 2,000 open-entry events. Search for an arts/crafts
show, festival or fair by dates, city, state, or region. You can plan
a show participation schedule or check out the possibilities for a
weekend outing."

If you click on "Search the complete database of events" it will bring
you here:
http://artandcraftshows.net/query.php

I typed in a search of dates from May 1, 2003 - Dec. 31, 2003, without
narrowing down states or cities, and came up with over 500 matches:
http://artandcraftshows.net/results/all/all/all/20030501/20031231/0/qry.html

There are icons below each event depicting what type of items are
included in the show. Unfortunately, other than the date or location,
most of the events have no contact information. A very few have a
website listing off to the side. Also, the database only depicts
listings through 2003. I imagine the listings for 2004 start at the
end of December, or before, hopefully.

However:

The online database above comes from Sunshine Artist Magazine which
will provide you with more entries, details, addresses and contact
numbers if you subscribe.

correspondents, official reviewers, and artists like you who fill out
our FastAudit cards. These reports and listings give you all the

Click on the link for "Craft Show Finder" on the left-hand side of the
page and it will bring you here:
http://216.155.1.3:591/showfinder/index.html

"Use the navigation bar on the left to find the most complete and
up-to-date information about shows throughout the United States. Your
results will be listed in chronological order and will include the
show name, city/state and show dates. Simply click on the show's name
to review further details about the show. Our craft show listings are
updated on a weekly basis and are for artisans looking for shows in
which to exhibit and arts & crafts buyers searching for quality shows
to attend. With our user-friendly listings, you can do a broad search
for shows or you can narrow your search down to specific parameters to
get a listing of shows that only meet your criteria."

I found 395 records for "Retail" shows for 2003, and only 5 listed so
far for 2004. However, it is probably a good bet that many of the 2003
shows are repeated the following year.

Festival Network Online
http://www.festivalnet.com/indexes.html

This is a rather tedious way to search for events that might be of
interest to you...however, I imagine you might be able to do it once
and then narrow down shows for future reference.

You can search by state, and then quickly narrow down the shows from
there, as they have a link beside each event that tells the details of
the show.

Again, the data is only for 2003.

artshowcenter-ga,

I called Sunshine Artist Magazine and they do provide events for 2004
based on one year from the issue date. For instance, the April 2003
issue will show events through April 2004.

I also noticed better results on the Art & Craftshows.net search by
typing in dates starting from 2004. For example, a search of events
from Jan.2004 - April 2004 came up with 24 events:
http://artandcraftshows.net/results/all/all/all/20040101/20040430/0/qry.html

However, as I stated earlier, the contact details are available
primarily through the offline magazine.

www.festivalnet.com is a great site because it lets you select "allow
commercial items" in types of vendors allowed.
