Hello jeffdruid,

Thank you for your question.

Cookies are actually small text files and are easy to transfer from
one machine to another if you so desire. For example, in Windows 98,
they are found in the Windows/Cookies directory. They are small enough
to fit many on a floppy and transfer, or can be done over a network
connection if you so desire.

In other Windows versions, the cookies directory may be located in
another location, but it will always be named Cookies. Simple use the
Start / Find Files or Folders utility to locate the Cookie folder,
then copy the contents from one machine to the other. In XP, for
example, they are kept in folders under each user of the machine. If
you need help finding this folder, just let me know which Windows
operating system you are using and I will be happy to help.

I trust this should answer your question. If anything requires further
explanation or research, please do post a Request for Clarification
prior to rating the answer and closing the question and I will be
pleased to assist further.

Regards,

Depending on your OS and browser, this may or may not work. I tried
to do just that in the past, using IE 5.0, I think. I could copy the
files fine, but apparently there was an index file that listed what
cookies were there and didn't recognize the new ones I copied to the
folder. I couldn't just copy the index folder, because Windows said
the file was in use and couldn't be changed. I ended up resorting to
somewhat scary Registry edits to tell the OS to look in a different
place for the file. I have since found the better way, at least for
IE is to go under the File menu in IE, choose Import and Export, then
Export the cookies - they will go to a single file named Cookies.txt,
which can then be saved to a floppy or CD and then imported onto the
new computer through the same menus. Also, might want to go through
and delete any unneeded cookies prior to exporting.

Actually, the commenter is exactly correct - and thank you for
pointing that out.

In later versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the Cookies folder
contains an archived ( and possibly hidden )file called index.dat that
actually contains most of the information from the cookies themselves
and indexes the folder. While it is possible this could be copied if
the computer was in safe mode, and could definitely be copied from
booting to DOS, it would be more convenient for you to use the
Import/Export wizard from the File Menu if you are using a later
version of Internet Explorer.

Apologies for the oversight and thanks ac67-ga for the comment.
