Question ID: 195949
I am looking for a video "bad girls of the bible." I believe it is a
home box office video, but I can't find it on their web site. I am
not looking for a video "starring" Liz Curtis Higgs, author of book by
the same name. I am looking for a serious, feminist discussion of
Eve, Jezebel, etc. that was on TV here locally (Portland Maine) in
Dec. 2001, it was on an educational channel, probably this history
channel.

I haven't been able to find any videos entitled "Bad Girls of the
Bible" except the ones starring Liz Curtis Higgs.

Is there any chance that the title could be "Scarlet Women of the
Bible?" Could the program described below be what you need?

"Tonight, I watched an old delight of delights: Mysteries of the
Bible, a rare (to my knowledge, anyway) airing on the History Channel.
How I love that show! This episode was "Scarlet Women of the Bible,"
about the "evil" women of holy scripture: Eve, Delilah, Jezebel,
Herodias and Salome, and (of course) Lilith. Are they truly wicked? Do
they deserve their bad reputations? What do the actual stories say,
and how have the stories been interpreted since then, in a misogynist
(or, at least, mistrustful of powerful women) culture and church?
Interesting stuff."

If "Scarlet Women of the Bible" is indeed what you seek, I'll be glad
to go on a hunt for it.

After extensive searching, I've been unable to locate an episode of
"Scarlet Women of the Bible" sold alone. I did find a used,
mint-condition boxed set of "Mysteries of the Bible (series 1)," for
$79.95. This contains the program you want, and several others. Would
information about how to purchase this set be a satisfactory answer to
your question?

Yes, that willl be satisfactory, I can then get my university to buy
it. The thing is I want to show that selection in a course on Women
and Religion. thanks, Susan

This was an intriguing quest. Having determined that "Scarlet Women of
the Bible" is the video you need, the more difficult part has been
locating the video for sale.

One option is to go on Amazon's waiting list for a used copy, but
there is no guarantee that a copy will become available:

Amazon.com: "Scarlet Women of the Bible"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000006QA0/qid%3D1051408552/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-7617671-8207003

I have determined that "Scarlet Women of the Bible" is included in
Volume 1 of A&E's "Mysteries of the Bible" videotape collection:

"Mysteries of the Bible
Vols: 6; Mins: 100 each; Aud:A/Y
Start with an introduction to the questions and riddles that have
puzzled scholars and theologians for centuries. (1) Revelations of the
Dead Sea Scrolls Parts I & II; (2) Moses at Mount Sinai & Jesus in the
Galilee; (3) Joshua at the Walls of Jericho & Cities of Evil: Sodom &
Gomorrah; (4) Masada: The Last Fortress & Jesus: Holy Child; (5) A
Violent God & Noah's Lost Ark; (6) Scarlet Women of the Bible,
Jerusalem: Holy Deadly City & King David: Poet Warrior. 1993."

Dear Pinkfreud: thanks a million. I am going to teach a continueing
education class next fall, a not for credit thing, trying to build
some community awareness around feminist theology, and called the
course "bad girls of the bible." Found the book, but it is awful,
definitely NOT feminist. But I knew I'd seen that show. I will have
my media department order the video series, and thanks too for the
extra tid bits. Maybe when I teach a whole course on the topic I'll
use those videos. Many thanks, Susan

Thank you very much for the five-star rating! Your feminist theology
course sounds fascinating. I'm glad to have been able to help.
