Here is the situation, I am currently under my step-mom's auto
insurance policy, and for whatever reason, she wanted me to get my
vehicle off from her policy and for me to get my own. As of right
now, we are insured by Geico. My knowledge in this auto insurance
field is limited, and I would like to seek advice from professionals
who can help give recommendations and directions to shop for the best
auto insurance policy, to get me a better understanding of US auto
insurance policy, and give me an estimated quote on the price for the
insurance policy.

A little on my background (as you might need it to analyze the price
on the quote), I am currently a 20 years old (male) college student in
Arizona. Originally, I am from Hong Kong, thus I would be consider as
an international student. I have resided in Arizona for a more than 7
years. I have been through middle schools and high school in the
state, and currently attending to college pursuing my degree in
electrical engineering. I have be able to maintain a rather well GPA
(> 3.0), which had led me to the "good student discount" from my
current auto insurance company. Some information about my car:

[91 Mecury Topaz GS]
- Sedan 4 Doors
- 4-Cyl. 2.3 Liter
- Automatic
- Mileage: 63000 mi
- Front-side air bags (only on driver's side)
- Manual windows
- Cruise Control
- Power Steering
- has all the necessary equipment like AC, AM/FM radio, Cassette
- Color: tan

My driving record is not perfect. I was caught speeding by a camera
several months back (>10 mph over, not faster than 15 mph). Due to
that it was my first offense, I was given a chance to attend driving
school, so that my violation would not be put on record. From my
co-workers, I have heard that Progessive and Geico are by far the
cheapest and reliable auto insurance companies around. Though, given
my background as a young male, 20 years of age, and had a previous
traffic violation, it will be extremely expensive to acquire my own
policy. I heard that the most basic policy is call "under-insured,"
as describe to me, it means that the policy will cover only the 3rd
party but not myself. Does that also mean I will not be cover in any
accidents, regardless of whose fault. What is the definition of
"deductible," from my vague understanding, it is the amount of money
the insurance compnay is willing to put out for you, and the rest you
will have to pay on your own. I really need a basic and layout
understanding of different types of insurance policy, it would be nice
if it can be paraphrased in words other than just a link which I have
to seek through information myself. Also, given my background, I
would like, if you can, gather some infomration from a number of
companies in Arizona that will insure me, and their estimated
quote.

Thanks a lot!

I recently renewed an auto policy and found rates that varied greatly
by the company you called. My recommendation is to call several
companies as each have different pricing schemes. I currently use
Allstate which costs me 40% less than GEICO wanted for the same exact
policy. Other top companies to try include State Farm, Progressive,
Liberty Mutual. Be cautious though, about too many companies running
your credit report before giving you a quote as this may effect your
credit rating with "too many inquiries."
