I need to know the top 5-10 companies of each of these 3 categories.
For each, I NEED the company name, address and phone, and would LIKE
to have a contact name in R&D or Business Development. U.S. Companies
are preferred, but foreign companies acceptable if they are strong
leaders.
The Google research I've done myself brings me primarily to
wholesalers and distributors. I need to get to the manufacturer level
(not necessarily the plant/facility (as these are often overseas) ,
but the COMPANIES that PLACE the orders for things to be manufactured
and branded under their name, i.e. Bayer, etc...)
Medical device MANUFACTURERS specializing in dialisis and related
equipment.
Medical equipment and supplies MANUFACTURERS specializing in
hospital-grade equipment and supplies.
Medical equipment and supply MANUFACTURERS specializing in supplies
surrounding IV equipment, (tubes, needles, flow control devices,
pumps, etc.)
I have no clue how to price this research. I'm hoping there is a list
somewhere on the web for each of these, and it's just a matter of
finding the list, and that I'm simply doing a poor job with my search
criteria.
If you could also provide the list in text in the body of the answer,
comma delimited, with a field for category 1, 2 or 3, that would be
great. Please tell me the charge, and I'll add it into my tip.
THANK YOU!

Hi margi,
I know several researchers have attempted your question (myself
included) and all have been stymied as to how to answer it.
There are a couple of problems here that I can see.
Primarily, your categories are too broad and nebulous. For example, "
hospital-grade equipment and supplies." What does this mean? This
could be anything from latex gloves to anesthesia machines to cleaning
supplies. How does one even define the "top 5" manufacturers when
there are so many different products?
I'm not sure what you need the data for, but if possible you should
define your products more succinctly. One way to do it would be to
use the FDA product codes. But even that leads to some large disparate
lists.
For example:
Some dialysis related product codes are: FKO, KDI, FKJ, FKF, FJT,
FLA, LBW, FIF, FKP plus a dozen more for other related accessory
products.
FKO = CATHETER, PERITONEAL DIALYSIS, SINGLE USE
KDI = DIALYZER, HIGH PERMEABILITY WITH OR WITHOUT SEALED DIALYSATE
SYSTEM
And so forth ….
Then for each of these you could look up manufacturers that are
registered with the FDA. However, even then I'm not sure how you would
rank the companies. Even if you could (maybe based on number of
devices?), you would still have to do further research to find address
and phone, and contact name in R&D or Business Development.
We're talking many many hours here – more like days. I'm not even sure
the $200 maximum that Google Answers allows you to pay would cover the
amount of work to be done to compile the lists you're looking for.
Now..all that said …. The raw data on manufacturers and medical
devices registered in the US IS available.
Quoth the FDA --
"Section 510 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act)
requires that all establishments engaged in the manufacture,
preparation, propagation, compounding, assembly, or processing of
medical devices intended for human use and commercial distribution in
the United States register their establishments with the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). The term "device" includes all in-vitro
diagnostic products and in-vitro diagnostic biological products not
subject to licensing under section 351 of the Public Health Service
Act (42 U.S.C. 262)."
AND .. the Freedom of Information Act means that this data is
available to you.
If you like, for the fee you are offering, I would be happy to provide
you with step by step instructions on how to obtain and search the
various databases that the FDA provides to the public. These would
include (among other things) detailed information on each registered
establishment, device listings submitted by registered establishments,
and the product code directory.
Sample field from Device Listings database –

From this raw data, you could do your own research. In fact, if you
identified your top companies, you could come back to Google Answers
with those names and have the researchers find your contact
information for you.
Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in.

Hi K~
I'm asking this on behalf of a client, and I've forwarded your request
for clarification to her. She was out of town for a while, and we just
met yesterday. She's going to try and clarify and get back to me.
Bottom line: Yes, she's interested, but I don't have the info for you
yet. She said it is a priority for her, so I do expect it soon.
Thank you for your patience.

I appreciate the follow up. Unfortunately, I do not have the OK to
provide the methodology as the answer instead of the answer itself.
She's taken a printout of your clarification request to a colleague to
see what he thinks. The biggest disappointment is that, if I
understand your notes correctly, this process won't rate the top ones
or give us a way to judge their size or volume, even if we broke the
question into chunks and paid you $200 for each chunk. Since it sounds
like the results of this methodology will result in a large,
unqualified list, we'll still have a lot of homework to do to get to
our "top 5-10" list for the three categories. We were hoping there
was a list somewhere, perhaps published by a trade or financial
magazine. (BTW- We would consider "top" to be gross revenues and/or
market share.)
I guess it boils down to not being sold on using the FDA codes as the
way to get the info. Nonetheless, I appreciate your work and follow
up. Please post whatever minimal answer you can just so that we can
post the $20 to you. No need to go into the detail you describe since
it won't result in the info we need. Please simply consider the $20
for your work to date. Thank you. Margi-ga
